Goodbye Big Time Timmy Jim
by Michael Altfest
|
It's lunchtime on Sep. 3, 2015 and I just read the news that San Francisco Giants pitcher and two-time Cy Young Award winner, two-time no-hitter, three-time World Series champion and importantly, University of Washington alum, Tim Lincecum has been shelved for the remainder of the season. We've all come to understand that this likely signals the end for one of the most decorated and beloved Giants of all time.
While there's talk of the Giants signing Timmy to a minor league contract this off season, I wouldn't bet my son's 529 College Plan on it. For more than a couple years I, like most of the Giants nation, have been mentally preparing myself for this moment. Players come and go. By definition, eras come to an end.
I'm not going to plant a stake in the ground and declare myself the biggest Tim Lincecum fan ever. But I can say that Timmy has probably meant as much to me as any pro athlete. Those who know me know I have a soft spot -- okay, some might call it an irrational, unconditional love -- for athletes from the University of Washington -- my alma mater -- who end up playing professionally for my favorite teams.
Sometimes that comes back to bite me; see Jerramy Stevens. But in Timmy's case, I couldn't have lucked out more. As I've been reflecting, I may never see him pitch again, at least not on the Giants. I've also started to realize just how personal his career has been to me. It's going to be sad to see him go.
I would like to offer up my personal Top Timmy Moments. Certainly there's nothing earth shattering in here and most people can probably recall a very similar list. But I'll try to share how and why these moments were personal to me.
May 6, 2007. Because of my alma-mater-to-favorite-pro-team rule, Timmy basically became my favorite baseball player of all time the moment he was drafted by the Giants. I watched his progress through the minors like a hawk and when his call-up was officially announced, I bought a pair of tickets just above the Giants bullpen for that first start. (Since the Giants were a hair worse than terrible you could actually do that -- buy tickets, that is -- back in 2007 without mortgaging your home.)
I dragged my girlfriend and now wife, miraculously, to the stadium super early so we could watch Timmy warm up just a few feet away. I still have the video somewhere and I still have a vivid memory of the sound Ryan Howard made when he welcomed Timmy to the Bigs with a crushing home run.
2007-08 off season. Does anyone else remember the talk that winter about the Giants needing to make a trade for a big bat and the subsequent Timmy for Alex Rios rumors? I certainly do, because I spent all winter arguing against such a ridiculous trade with my boss, Joe, who was gung ho about it going down. (Joe is one of the biggest baseball fans I've ever met and I hung that one over his head for quite some time. Hi, Joe!)

Altfest was one of the first to sport a #55 jersey. (Seen here in Washington Nationals stadium.)
|
|
May 12, 2008. Here's the only stake I'm planting: I'm pretty sure I was the first person at AT&T Park to be wearing an authentic #55 jersey. (Mind you, Timmy was 7-5 with a 4.00 ERA his first season.) Timmy didn't pitch this game but it was my birthday, for which my parents gave me an authentic, Giants 50th Anniversary #55 home jersey. Late in the game my brother and I were visiting some friends across the stadium and an usher stopped me, not to keep me from sneaking into seats I didn't belong in, but to admire and compliment the jersey. (That doesn't happen when everyone's got shirts on, folks.)
December 4, 2008. As luck would have it, I took a trip to Seattle that week to take in a few UW Husky basketball games. Apparently Timmy and I had the same travel agent because he was honored at the game for his Cy Young Award. Funny, I just happened to have my copy of Sports Illustrated, which featured Timmy on the cover. And a Sharpie. Thanks for the autograph, Tim!
October 7, 2010. How's this for a stretch: Oct. 6 you pick out a family dog with your newlywed wife; Oct. 7 you attend Timmy's 14K, two-hit, no-run masterpiece; Oct. 8 you catch a flight to Kona, Hawaii to celebrate your first wedding anniversary. (Trips to Hawaii and family pets shouldn't take a back seat to a baseball game but when you attend the game with your wife and your little brother and sister and it turns out to be probably the most dominant individual performance you'll ever see, well, let's just say my dog understands.)
July 13, 2013. For all the games I was at, here's to the one I wasn't at. I was, however, in San Diego that weekend specifically to watch the Giants vs. Padres series with my dad. But three straight games were a lot so we decided we'd just go to the Friday and Sunday games instead. But Saturday's game lives vividly in my mind. My dad and I listening to the broadcast on a drive home, slowly realizing we may have chosen our games poorly. We stopped for Chinese food, sitting in disbelief and eating in virtual silence as we refreshed the game update on our phones. Back home, with the game blacked out locally, we tapped into my Slingbox and got it up just in time to catch the final outs, huddled in front of my parent's laptop. Timmy's first no-hitter. Just the two of us celebrating quite animatedly in an otherwise empty house. It was a silly sight to behold.
June 25, 2014. Of the hundreds, if not thousands of Giants games I've consumed in my life, it's quite a coincidence I would be sitting in the same exact room, in the same exact spot, again with my dad next to me, less than a year later, watching Timmy pitch another no-hitter against the same exact team. But that's not what makes this one memorable for me.
My dad, a lifelong Giants fan from the Bronx and who raised his sons the same way, would pass away just 5 days later. Celebrating another incredible Giant moment as passionately as ever, this moment was, fittingly, the last one of a lifetime of father and son bondings over the Giants that I would share with him.
If in fact this is the end, fare thee well Big Time Timmy Jim! It's been a heck of a ride and one that each and every Giants fan should feel extremely fortunate for.
Michael Altfest was raised a Giants fan in Padres territory. A marketing and communications professional with more than 15 years experience, Michael now devotes his career to the nonprofit sector.

Raiders Super Fan --
Andrea Sedano, Dre of the Dead
My hometown is San Diego but my team is the Oakland Raiders. I'm 20-years-old and have been reppin my Raiders since I was in the womb. Mom and Pops have been Raiders fans since the team was in Los Angeles.
I became interested in being a Super Fan when I was 14-years-old and saw what they represented, serving different communities and giving back. Whether it was a blood drive, toy drive or children with cancer, I wanted to be part of that family.
I loved the way Metal Cindy looked. I told Mom that's what I wanted to be like and so after Cindy and (Gorilla) Rilla gave me their blessings, I became Dre of the Dead. I enjoy the energy and, of course, the attention. I have met so many wonderful people on my journey, that's why I call them my Raider family.
Being one of the youngest fans, I enjoy it when the parents tell me how much their children love me and how I am a role model to them. That's a great feeling. Dad was president of the Bakersfield Raider Nation until we moved to Visalia. Mom does my makeup, which takes about two hours, so it usually takes about two and a half hours total, to make sure my tutu is fluffy and my jacket is showing off all my cool autographs, mostly from Raiders legends like Tom Flores, Jim Otto and many more.
Andrea Sedano is among a number of Oakland Raiders super fans who add excitement and delight to attending Raiders games. Photos by Ed Jay.

Question Man -- How many games will the 49ers win this year? Why?
|
|
Four to six. Tomsula looks like a good coach but their personnel losses over the off-season are devastating. They'e in a major rebuilding mode and won't really be very good for two or three years, at the least.
Richard Lupoff, author, Berkeley |
|
|
Ten games. The team has drafted for depth the last few years. All the players lost have young replacements on the team. As good? No. But definitely young and hungry.
