Historic Deerfield Fall Programs for October and November
Deerfield, Mass. (September 15, 2015) ----   The following is a list of upcoming programs and events at Historic Deerfield in October and November 2015. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are included with general admission.
 
Special Events
2015 ADA/Historic Deerfield Antiques Show
October 10-11
11 a.m. - 6 p.m. (10/10), 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. (10/11)
Deerfield Academy Hockey Rink. $15, free for Historic Deerfield members.
On Columbus Day Weekend,  the Antiques Dealers' Association of America, Inc., will once again bring together some of the nation's finest dealers for their annual art and antiques show featuring the best of 18th- and 19th-century American art, antiques and design.  Surrounded by the historic houses and quintessential New England village setting of Historic Deerfield, in Deerfield, Massachusetts, the ADA/Historic Deerfield Show provides customers with a fun and informative experience in antiquing and early design. The show is considered by both serious and casual collectors to be one of the year's most important. On view and for sale will be remarkable objects from the 17th through the 19th centuries that will improve the quality of any collection and the look of any home.  For more information, visit adadealers.com.

Archaeology Day in Deerfield
October 17, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Free
Enjoy an Archaeological Tour of Deerfield Village and a guided tour of the Old Burying Ground on Albany Road with Claire Carlson, Education Program Coordinator at Historic Deerfield. Both programs are free and open to the public. Part of Massachusetts Archaeology Month. 

Yankee Ingenuity and New England Decorative Arts, 1790-1840

Historic Deerfield Decorative Arts Forum
Please join us for an in-depth examination of the ingenious nature of the decorative arts of New England's inventors, merchants, and hucksters during late 18th and early 19th centuries. Forum speakers and demonstrators will include Peter Benes, Deborah Child, David Jaffee, William McMillen, Mary Cheek Mills, Sumpter Priddy, Andrew Raftery, Christine Ritok, and Philip Zea. Day of Giving
November 27

Opt-out of Black Friday chaos, and instead let Historic Deerfield be your destination for             handmade, heartfelt giving in preparation for the holiday season. On the Day of Giving, every museum visitor will have the opportunity to handcraft a special gift using simple or natural materials. The Day of Giving also kicks off our support of the Community Action Holiday Gift Program, when the museum will accept a gift item for a child 18 and under in lieu of museum admission, from November 27 - December 13.

17th Century Life
November 28
10 a.m.-4 p.m., drop in anytime, Visitor Center at Hall Tavern.
Meet the Society of the 17th Century, a group of re-enactors who will bring our historic Hall Tavern building to life with an incredible array of period arts, crafts and trades. Also enjoy open hearth cooking demonstrations, and make a handmade gift with the help of a museum educator.
 
Wreath Making for the Houses of Historic Deerfield
November 30
5 p.m. -8 p.m., Deerfield Community Center
Help create beautiful natural wreaths to decorate the doorways of Deerfield. Bring your creativity, enthusiasm, and an extra pair of pruning shears. No experience required. Supplies and refreshments will be provided. A second workshop will be offered on December 1, from 1 - 4 p.m. Free, pre-registration required. Hands-On Learning 
 
Archaeology Lab
Saturdays and Sundays, September 12 - November 22
Drop in anytime between 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., History Workshop Building
Come and learn about the science behind historical archaeology. Visitors will help clean, sort, and identify artifacts. Learn about soil and explore a "shoe box" dig. Make some clay marbles based on archaeological finds to take home.

Focus Fridays
October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
11 a.m.
The Focus Friday Series will pair inquisitive visitors with experienced guides to discuss an individual object in the Historic Deerfield collection. If you are a curious person who would enjoy conversation and guidance looking at an object with focus, join us each Friday in October at 11 a.m. New this season, Focus Fridays will include guided tours of the Old Burying Ground.  October 2: Old Burying Ground; October 9: Desk and Bookcase/Secretary attributed to Cotton White; October 16: Deerfield Blue and White Society Textiles; October 23: Two-handled covered Silver Cup by Gerritt Onckelbag; October 30: Old Burying Ground.

Girl Scout Badge Days
Pottery Badge for Brownies

Join us to see the wonderful pottery collection in Historic Deerfield's Flynt Center of Early New England Life.  After looking closely at the pottery you will visit our Apprentice's Workshop to complete more steps of your badge as you learn about clay, try your hand at techniques used by potters of the past and make a small clay pot with a lid.  You will take your pot home with you and decorate it during a troop meeting. Badges are not included in the cost of the program but can be purchased at any GSCWM store. Open to troops and single girls with an adult. 

Supper at the Hall Tavern: Special Hearth Cooking Class

5 p.m. - 8 p.m. 
Come and prepare hearty tavern fare and enjoy supper by the fire.

Open Hearth Cooking: Foods of the Fall Harvest

Autumn was a busy time in early American kitchens. The abundance of fresh produce needed to be processed and preserved for the winter.  Our cooks this fall will be cooking dishes featuring apples, pumpkins, and corn.

Open Hearth Cooking: Pies
November 7, 14
10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Visitor Center at Hall Tavern Kitchen
As the fall settles in and the days get shorter, our cooks will be busy in the kitchen making pies. Pies were a common dish served as part of the meal. They were savory or sweet-sometimes both- with surprising flavor combinations.
 
Thanksgiving Dishes
November 21, 27 and 28
10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Visitor Center at Hall Tavern Kitchen
Come and see how our hearth cooks prepare traditional Thanksgiving dishes using hearth cooking methods. Learn about the history of harvest celebrations and the evolution of the American Thanksgiving holiday. 



Historic Trades Demonstrations
Visitors will meet talented craftspeople and observe their work up close each weekend this fall with our Historic Trade demonstrations. Learn how a printing press was important to communication in colonial times. See a joiner use a series of tools to square, shape, and join separate pieces of wood into a single, strong window sash. Working with the head of fiery coals, watch the blacksmith deftly transform hard, shapeless metal into a graceful, functional object. Check the calendar for a schedule of specific demonstrations which occur on Saturdays and Sundays, October 3 - December 12. Included with general admission.
