Survey Finds Nonprofit Sector Poised to Grow More than Private Sector in 2015
The Nonprofit Employment Practices Survey, which provides a glimpse of the current employment practices and economic trends of the sector, found that nonprofits are projecting growth in 2015 that could potentially outpace the corporate sector: 50% of nonprofits anticipated creating new jobs this year, compared to only 36% of private companies.
Here are several other findings from the survey that highlight a thriving sector:
- 49% of nonprofits reported increasing staff over the past year
- All positions in the sector are growing: direct service and program management are positioned to grow the most, with fundraising and community outreach also high on the list
- Nonprofits are using their social media savy to recruit employees; use of LinkedIn to find employees has increased by 10%, Facebook is up 11%, and Twitter is up 5%
While the projected growth is exciting news for the sector, it also shines a light on challenges related to recruitment and retention. While the rate of nonprofit turnover has increased to 19%, over 50% of nonprofits do not have a formal recruitment strategy, and the majority of organizations do not have a formal recruitment budget.
In order to maintain growth and retain the employees who are the driving force behind the essential work that nonprofits do, organizations must take a proactive approach to address these challenges. Supporting, developing and investing in nonprofit employees will be important over the next few years, especially as we see a generational shift in leadership.
Make sure to check out the 2015 Nonprofit Employment Practices Survey's fantastic infographic and read the full survey report. And if you're interested in tackling the topic of workforce development, attend one of MNN's regional meetings mentioned above.)
