aking Sense of Place: The Quest for a Livable City
As American cities focus on green living & infill redevelopment as an alternative to car-dependent sprawl, it behooves us to look to communities that are working on getting it right. Surprisingly, one is Orlando where their mayor has set a course for the city to become the most sustainable in the country.
This program will be the final one in the "Boom, Bust & the Built Environment" series. The program will examine some of the different paths being taken by Orlando, St. Petersburg and other cities as they seek to use new models to become livable cities.
Speakers include Curtis Ostrodka, Planning + Design Studio Manager at VHB in Orlando and additional panel members.

Another Preservation Success Story Opens Downtown!
The Tramor Cafeteria, built in 1929, reopened this week - as a German beer hall, The Hofbrauhaus! Click here to read a fun Tampa Bay Times story about the opening and how to act in a German beer hall. Reuse of this locally landmarked building proves again that historic buildings not only can be reused but that many businesses seek such buildings - indeed - preservation works!

Walking Tours
SPP's regular tour season resumes Saturday, Oct. 3. Tours will be offered each Saturday morning at 10 am thru April. Each Saturday of the month features a different tour. Read about the different tours on the

SPP member! The tours offer one a chance to see some of the best of the 'Burg's architecture, learn about the city's history & to experience some of the 'Burg's historic neighborhoods.

(2002) (PG) - Whoopi Goldberg stars in the film with music that will have you rocking and a story that will have you laughing as she is placed in a convent by the witness protection program, a place she doesn't quite fit! Music by Freelow.

(1971) (G) - SPP joins Keep Saint Petersburg Local and its annual Localicious Festival by offering this family fun "foodie" film, starring Gene Wilder. The film is scrumdidilyumptious! Music by Skully.

(1963) - Get ready for Halloween with this Hitchcock thriller about a wealthy San Francisco socialite who ends up in a small Northern California town. Her visit takes a bizarre twist when the birds begin attacking. Music by Liz Pennock & Dr. Blues.

Next Porch Party in Allendale - Sept. 25!!
SPP has found another incredible historic home with wonderful and generous hosts - so that means it's time for another SPP Porch Party! Greg Tappan & Keith Weiler will be opening their historic Allendale home for the party. Cade Allen purchased the home and surrounding property in 1922 and shortly thereafter platted the new neighborhood that would become Allendale. Allen and his sons built nearly 40 homes in the area between 1922 and 1954, homes known for their quality of construction and stone that Allen had shipped in by rail from Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Today, three of Allen's homes are designated as local landmarks and the Allendale neighborhood is considering seeking historic district designation to help protect the neighborhood's character that is being threatened by redevelopment.
Join SPP to see a beautifully restored and decorated home, for some good cheer and an update on what's happening with preservation in the 'Burg.
