Pentecost no bkgrnd

October 1, 2015  Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost.

Fr. Eric will celebrate and Deacon Bill will preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

October 4 is the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost.

As on most Sundays during "Ordinary Time," the longest season of the church year, vestments and altar cloth are green, the color of growth and life.

The Season After Pentecost is essentially the part of the year that is left over after everything has been accounted for. The name of this season varies widely from church to church-it can be called Kingdomtide, Dominiontide, or Ordinary Time. In most churches, the general theme of the Bible readings and sermons concerns the church's mission in the world.

The Season After Pentecost begins on the day after Pentecost. In the western Church, it ends on the Saturday before the First Sunday of Advent. In the eastern Church, it ends on 14 November.

Dinner for Eight
Dinner-for-Eight, one of Emmanuel's most loved and longest running traditions, was organized so adults at Emmanuel could have dinner with a small group and get to know others on a more intimate basis. These small gatherings make it possible for parishioners to gain new friendships in a setting that is as elegant or casual as the hosts care to create.

Our next Dinner-for-Eight will be held on Saturday, October 24. Details to follow!

Parish Name Badges name tag

We have upgraded our name badges for use in the church to a printed more permanent version. They are affixed with two magnets, which will not damage your clothing and can be put on easily and quickly. They are currently in baskets in the narthex on the Kensington Ave entrance of the church, alphabetically sorted.

Alternatively, you are welcome to keep your badge in the baskets situated by the ramp entrance. Please replace them after use, unless you wish to take it with you to keep in your car or purse for your next visit to the Emmanuel.

They are expensive collectively, so please take responsibility for them and for any replacement. If we have omitted anybody please let the office know and we will add him or her to the collection.

It is worth noting that if you have a pacemaker fitted you should NOT use the magnetic version. Please let us know that and we will make adjustments accordingly.

Saint of the week: St. Michael the Archangel

Feast Day: September 29

The Feast of Michael and All Angels, popularly called Michaelmas

On the Feast of Michael and all Angels, popularly called Michaelmas, we give thanks for the many ways in which God's loving care watches over us, both directly and indirectly, and we are reminded that the richness and variety of God's creation far exceeds our knowledge of it.

By the time of Christ, Jewish popular belief included many specifics about angels, with names for many of them. There were thought to be four archangels, named Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. Sometimes each archangel is associated with one of the seven planets of the Ptolemaic system (the moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). Michael is associated with Saturn and Uriel with the Sun.

Michael (the name means "Who is like God?") is said to be the captain of the heavenly armies. He is mentioned in the Scriptures in Daniel 10:13,31; 12:1 (where he is said to be the prince of the people of Israel); in Jude 9 (where he is said to have disputed with the devil about the body of Moses); and in Revelation 12:7 (where he is said to have led the heavenly armies against those of the great dragon).

He is generally pictured in full armor, carrying a lance, and with his foot on the neck of a dragon. (Pictures of the Martyr George are often similar, but only Michael has wings.) In other depictions Michael may be holding a pair of scales in which he weighs the souls of the departed and may hold the book of life (as in the Book of Revelation), to show that he takes part in the judgment. However this form of depiction is less common than the slaying of the dragon.
