Did You KNOW ...
Under Maryland law:
- NO tobacco product can be sold to anyone under 18 years old
- The sale of tobacco products to a minor is a criminal misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $300 for the first offense and up to $1,000 for the second offense
- NO tobacco paraphernalia and electronic nicotine devices (e-cigarettes) can be sold to anyone under the age of 18
- The sale of e-cigarettes to a minor is a criminal misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000
- Retailers are required to check the ID of anyone under 27 years old who is buying tobacco products, including e-cigarettes
- The sale of clove cigarettes is ILLEGAL in Maryland, and the sale of flavored cigarettes is ILLEGAL under federal law
According to the most recent National Youth Tobacco survey, youth e-cigarette use TRIPLED from 2013 to 2014, surpassing use of regular cigarettes. E-cigarette manufacturers continue to use marketing tactics like slick magazine ads, celebrity endorsements and sweet, colorful flavors to attract youth. Read more here.

Free Smoking Cessation Classes
The Howard County Health Department offers
Smoking Cessation & Tobacco Treatment Programs. Classes are FREE to anyone who lives or works in Howard County.
Class begins on the first Wednesday of each month and is held for four (4) consecutive Wednesdays for 1 hour and 15 minutes.There are morning and evening sessions. Morning classes begin at 11:30 AM. Evening classes begin at 6:30 PM.
Medication and physician evaluation are dispensed as needed (must be 18 to receive medication). An optional 15 minute breathing and relaxation segment is offered at the end of each class.

Ohio Voters Reject Marijuana Legalization
Ohio voters have rejected the legalization of marijuana in their state, sending a strong message from a key swing state to 2016 Presidential candidates and to the rest of the country that legalization is neither inevitable nor desirable.
Ohioans Against Marijuana Monopolies (OAMM), a local, grassroots organization supported in part by Ohio's SAM (Smart Approaches to Marijuana) Action affiliate, led the opposition.
Voting
YES would have legalized the limited sale and use of marijuana and created 10 facilities with exclusive commercial rights to grow marijuana.
Voting NO left the current laws unchanged. Possession or use of marijuana for any reason remains illegal in Ohio. 64% of voters said no, defeating the initiative.

Permanent Medication Disposal Boxes
Howard County residents can drop off unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications at 3 locations in the County where permanent disposal boxes have been installed. Boxes are located at the Howard County Police Northern District Station (3410 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City) open 24/7, the Howard County Police Southern District Station (11226 Scaggsville Road, Laurel) open 24/7, and the Gary Arthur Community Center (2400 Route 97, Cooksville) open 7 AM to 9 PM Monday-Saturday, and 9 AM to 6 PM on Sundays.
Don't share your leftover meds with others - sharing drugs can be extremely dangerous!
The other person taking the drug may not have been seen by a physician to determine if he or she indeed needs the drug, what dosage is appropriate, and possible allergic reactions or adverse reactions due to other medications being taken.

Free Training to Save a Life! Opioid Overdose Response Training
If your child, spouse or friend is abusing opioids (prescription pain medicines such as Percocet or Vicodin, and street drugs such as heroin), attend the free training offered by the HowardCounty Health Department.
