Meet ISEA's New Volunteer Coordinator
A hiring committee comprised of Fred Sitkins (Executive Director), Jeanie Williams (Lead Scientist), Wayne Swallow (Lead Instructor), Bob Hagerman (First Mate), Sue Chrostek, (Lead Instructor), and Sally Somsel (Board Member) selected ISEA's new Volunteer Coordinator from a field of extremely qualified candidates. Thomas Maynard has accepted the position and will begin on April 6, 2015.
Tom's current job involves working with a very unique organization housed at Michigan Tech University called Mind Trekkers. I encourage you to check them out at:
http://mindtrekkers.mtu.edu/index.php. In this position Tom is responsible for planning large format festivals (8,000 + participants) staffed entirely by volunteers. Tom also has extensive experience as a trip leader for outdoor adventure programs.
Tom brings a very unique skill set to ISEA and will be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals of renewal and growth. Our hiring committee feels that we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to bring someone like Tom onboard and believe you will feel the same way.

April 2 Seminar with Tim Davis
Dr. Timothy Davis (ISEA's former Education Director) is a harmful algae bloom (HAB) researcher with NOAA's Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. He has spent the last ten years studying the ecology of these events in lakes throughout the Northeast USA and Australia. His current research focuses on the blooms that occur in the Great Lakes, primarily Lake Erie. He works with a team of NOAA scientists to forecast bloom size, frequency, and toxicity in an ever-changing world.
HABs occur annually in Lake Erie and other areas around the Great Lakes. These events can have severe environmental and socioeconomic impacts as well as be detrimental to human health. The threat is highlighted by the "do not drink" advisory issued for roughly 400,000 Toledo residents in August 2014 that lasted almost 48 hours. Notably, this was not the first advisory issued for cyanotoxin contamination in the western basin of Lake Erie, nor did it occur due to an extraordinary bloom such as the event that occurred in 2011. While these events typically do not occur in northern Lake Michigan, understanding the environmental drivers of HABs is important as climate change may allow for more favorable growth conditions around the Great Lakes region in future years.

Volunteer Open House & Training
Inland Seas has some big plans on the horizon and anticipates the need to expand our volunteer base to support those big plans. Our goal is to provide meaningful, enriching opportunities for volunteers to engage in our important work on a schedule that works for them.
One method of attracting new volunteers is through our
volunteer open house on March 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the ISEA Education Center. Please invite a friend to attend this event to learn about the many volunteer opportunities available at ISEA.
Schoolship instructor training begins on March 18 at the NMC Water Studies Institute in Traverse City from 5:30-7:30 p.m. This training continues each Wednesday at the same time and location for five weeks. We also host an all-day session for those who would like to get everything in one day on April 22 from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the ISEA Education Center and Museum in Suttons Bay.
Crewmember training begins on March 19 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at ISEA's Education Center and Museum in Suttons Bay. This training also occurs weekly on Thursdays for five sessions at the same time and location.
