From the Executive Director

"Mayor, County Exec Declare 'State of Emergency' Over Homelessness" was the recent eye-catching front page headline in the Seattle Times. This shocking story described the 66 homeless deaths in King County so far this year, and included these staggering statistics: 3,000 newly homeless people in King County each month and 3,000 homeless kids in Seattle Public Schools - including many in our neighborhood public schools. These numbers are extremely alarming and serve to refocus our energy on one of our most critical jobs here at the Helpline - helping to reduce and prevent homelessness. Our focused rent assistance provides short-term emergency aid that helps people in crisis -- assistance that often can mean the difference between staying in housing or ending up on the streets for individuals and families right here in our own neighborhood. Through this program we prevent 550 evictions each year, making a tremendous difference by stopping homelessness from occurring in the first place. Our prevention model is not just about doing the right thing; it also makes economic sense. It costs far less to keep someone in their home than to provide services to them once they are homeless.

We also provide security deposits to help move individuals and families out of homelessness and into housing. Security deposits are often the only barrier preventing someone from obtaining permanent housing. In the first six months of this year alone we provided move-in assistance to 32 households, including 43 children. For some families, this is the first time they have had their own home -- a place where they can sit at the table and have a meal together.

We are indeed in the throes of a true emergency, but we're proud that thanks to you and your support Queen Anne Helpline is an important part of the solution.

Warmly,
 Lisa

Coat Drive a HUGE Success!

A big thank you to local real estate broker Stephanie Kastner who collected 162 coats during her annual October coat drive! That is 162 men, women and children who will stay warm and dry thanks to her efforts and all of your wonderful donations. Wow, we are overwhelmed and our clients are so grateful. Thanks as well to Umpqua Bank and the Magnolia and Queen Anne Farmers Markets for providing space for the donation bins.

Sharing Thanksgiving Bounty

Once again, Queen Anne Helpline, in partnership with All Saint's Church, is coordinating a program to provide low-income seniors in Queen Anne, Magnolia, and South Lake Union with a substantial bag of groceries delivered to their door the day before Thanksgiving. The bags contain typical Thanksgiving fare including non-perishables like a can of vegetables and cranberry sauce, packages of instant mashed potatoes and stuffing mix, as well as perishable items like turkey breast, fresh fruit, a slice of pie - and more!

Last year we delivered nearly 60 bags; this year we'd love to deliver 100! We are currently reaching out to seniors to whom we have provided rent and/or utility assistance in the past year, as well as notifying local low-income buildings of the program.

We are also currently seeking assistance in packing the bags and delivering them to the seniors. We have created a link for people to volunteer time and/or help purchase the food items we need to fill the bags. If you are interested in helping out, the link is here:  Thanksgiving Food Volunteer
.
We've already had a great response in just the last couple of days - thank you so much to everyone who has already signed up! But we could use some more help with purchasing certain food items.

Coming together to help our neighbors is just about the best way we can think of to celebrate Thanksgiving!

Our Clients

Gary has been homeless for 13 years after the loss of his longtime job as a pressman, followed by  divorce and health issues. It has taken him a long time to try and stabilize his life; he has lived in tent encampments and shelters and slept on friends' couches. He was most recently at a tent encampment when LIHI (Low Income Housing Institute) invited him to apply for housing. A few months later, an apartment opened up in lower Queen Anne. As is often the case with formerly homeless people, coming up with security deposits and first month's rent is quite challenging. His social security payments will start up soon -- but not soon enough to get him into this apartment now.

Queen Anne Helpline is pleased to be able to offer assistance towards move-in costs so that people like Gary can have stable, safe housing. He is now looking forward to cooking in his own kitchen; he found some cookbooks at Goodwill and wants to eat more healthily. His adult daughter also gave him a spice rack! While he was here discussing assistance with move-in costs, he checked out the Helpline's linen bank and found some towels for his new bathroom. All of these items will help Gary settle into his new home.
