TIFT GRADUATION IS SATURDAY
Tift County schools closed for the school year on
Thursday, May 21. As the rock singer

 screamed, "School's out for summer; school's out forever!"
And for seniors, school at Tift County High will be out for them forever as they graduate Saturday, May 23, at Brodie Field. The processional begins at 8:45 a.m., followed by the ceremony at 9 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the processional will begin at 6:45 p.m. Saturday night, with the graduation ceremony at 7 p.m.,

Members of the Tift County Board of Education, assisted by Rachel Wall, junior class president, will present graduates with their diploma covers. Graduates will receive their diplomas immediately following the ceremony.
Beau Brinson Lamb, senior class president, will accept the diplomas for the Class of 2015. Sallie Torell, Rebekah Crumley, Christopher Spradley and James Ni will close the ceremony singing the alma mater.
The Class of 2015 has requested that the family members in attendance stand quietly for recognition when their graduate's name is called. The audience is asked to hold their applause until all graduates on a row are called.

EDUCATION FOUNDATION AWARDS GRANTS OF $21,919 TO TIFT SCHOOLS
The Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence has recently awarded a total of $21,919 in incentive grants for projects in Tift County schools. Since 1990, the foundation has encouraged teachers to apply for incentive grants to put their best ideas into practice. More than $438,000 in such grants have been awarded to Tift schools over the years.

TIFTON MUSEUM OF ARTS & HERITAGE ANNOUNCES PHOTO CONTEST AND EXHIBIT
It's time for the biannual South Georgia Photography competition and exhibit sponsored by the Tifton Museum of Arts and Heritage.
Professional and amateur photographers, ages 18 and up, may submit photographs for the event scheduled June  19-July 10 at the museum.
Photographers may submit a maximum of three photographs. The best will be included in the exhibit and will be eligible for prizes totaling $800. A qualified judge will choose the prize winners, who will be announced at an opening reception. Emphasis will be placed on creativity, originality and quality of work.
A non-refundable fee of $5 must accompany each print submitted. They must be brought to the museum on Tuesday or Wednesday, June 16 or 17 from 4-7 p.m. All photos must be framed and ready to hang, and may be no smaller than 8"x10" and no larger than 36"x36," including framing.

An opening reception will be 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 19. Admission is free. The exhibit will continue through July 10 and will be open Tuesdays - Fridays, 1- 5 p.m.; Thursdays, 1- 7 p.m.; and Sundays, 1-3 p.m. The museum is in downtown Tifton at 255 Love Ave.

GA LAWMAKERS MEET WITH TIFT CHAMBER
The Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce hosted local state legislators at the Chamber's monthly membership meeting on Thursday. They gave an update and insight into some of the more important legislation that came out of the 2015 General Assembly and answered questions from Chamber members. SOCCER FOR LITERACY SUCCESSFUL
Team Hidalgo took the men's championship after a full day of soccer play at Tiftarea YMCA's soccer fields in Literacy Volunteers' fourth annual Soccer for Literacy Tournament last Saturday, May 17.
Taking the women's championship was Divinas.
Team Banana won the childen's teams 6-8 years old, and the older Team Banana won the 8-10 years old competition. Children's books were distributed to players. The Douglas ladies volleyball team won the first-time women's volleyball competion. Cruz Olalde and Francisco Perez coordinated activities between the Hispanic Soccer League and Literacy Volunteers of Tifton-Tift County. "We do this event to support and show our appreciation for the language programs of Literacy Volunteers," Olalde said. "This has been a wonderful experience for us," said Dr.

Hamm presents trophy to Divinas

We also were able to get our services advertised among the Hispanic community." "The event had a festival atmosphere with vendors selling authentic Mexican food and fruit drinks," said Bonnie Sayles, director of Literacy Volunteers. "We appreciate our new vendor, South Georgia Dogs, coming out to sell hot dogs. All teams participating and vendors are sharing proceeds with Literacy Volunteers. "What fun it was to watch Victoria Horst and Dina Willis of the Tifton-Tift County Public Library reading a children's book, 'Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach,' in both English and Spanish to children," Sayles added. "The YMCA bouncy house and the Big Kahuna water slide from Jumpin J's kept the fun going all day long." |
