School Kickoff
Dear Friends,
Our school year is off to an awesome start as we welcomed back our "Amazin' Reys" students in grades ten through twelve and our approximately 100 new freshmen into our DBCR family. We enthusiastically embrace the new school year as we live  Don Bosco's modern-day oratory, which is alive and well in the halls of DBCR. Thank you for the gift of your presence in our community and please continue to join me in praying for our students as they learn, work, and grow this school year. With blessings,  Fr. Mike
Welcome Home!
Students, Faculty and Staff rejoiced in being together in the first "Founder's Day" celebration - one of only two days all year that the entire DBCR community is together. This special day honored both Founding President Fr. Steve Shafran, SDB, and the 200th birthday of St. John Bosco.

Back to School
Though the fun and games of Founder's Day are still fresh in our memories, students have settled into the new routine of their class schedules and gotten down to the business of education - the reason why we are all here! New arts electives and a Microsoft Training Program add to the excitement for class.

Back to Work
Stephon's smile says it all on his very first day of work last week. As he passed through morning check-in at the Gallery Place - Chinatown Metro stop, he eagerly anticipated joining the team at Ernst & Young and beginning his job in the Facilities department.
Backpacks from Boland!
BOLAND Employees Demonstrate Remarkable Generosity to Help Students Start the Year Right!
Thanks to the employees of Boland, a founding corporate partner hiring DBCR students, every new student at DBCR received a well-stocked L.L. Bean backpack monogrammed with the letters "DBCR" upon completion of the summer workforce training program.  When asked why the employees of Boland wanted to supply the students with these impressive well-supplied backpacks, Executive Vice President, Lou Boland, Jr., shared, "We wanted to give the DBCR students what we would give our own children, since DBCR students are our kids." Joining him to personally distribute the backpacks were members of Boland's Human Resource Team, Sarah Heitkemper, Vice President, and Sarah Van Brandt who directly supervises students on the job.
Faculty/Staff Welcome CRN Founder, President and CEO on Retreat
From left: Fr. Mike Conway, SDB, Justine Akinlami ('11), Jane Genster, and Fr. John Foley, SJ celebrate the future of the Cristo Rey Network, including more alumni staff members like Justine.

"If it's not scary, adventurous and surprising, it's not the work of the Gospel." (Sr. Helen Prejean, C.S.J.) These words, spoken by Cristo Rey Network (CRN)  founder, Fr. John Foley, SJ, were an inspiring introduction to DBCR's faculty and staff at the annual retreat day. What a blessing it was to have both Fr. Foley and CRN President and CEO, Jane Genster, present to lead the day's reflections, which focused on the Cristo Rey mission, who we are as DBCR, and what lies ahead. It was a great opportunity to reflect on this signature verse from Scripture:

"Get up and go into the city and there you will be told everything that God has determined for you to do." -Acts 22:10

Junior Board Celebrates Success of Summertime Soiree
Special thanks to the organizing committee of DBCR's Junior Board who hosted its first gala, the Summertime Soiree, to coincide with Founder's Day and the kick off to the school year. What a fabulous way to bring summer to an end! The Junior Board's efforts to raise awareness of DBCR students and programs (and to have a great time doing it) were a great success!
