Project Based Learning in Alt Ed
Early this school year, recent HUHS grad Hannah Redders and current HUHS student Tamra Schneider spoke to the alternative, project-based learning classes instructed by Erica Dimka, about the projects they have done to make a difference. This summer, Hannah ran 20 miles a day for 10 days in an effort to raise awareness and money for girls rescued from human trafficking. Meanwhile, Tamra is working to foster music education programs at schools in Central America. The students in the project-based learning classes will work on a variety of projects this year and have the opportunity to choose to work on projects that make a difference too.

PLTW Biomed Class Investigates Crime Scene
The PLTW Principles of Biomedical Sciences classes, instructed by Kathleen McClain, were analyzing evidence (blood, hair, fingerprints, shoe prints, unknown substances) found at the scene of a mysterious death to determine possible suspects and cause of death.

PSAT/NMSQT for Juniors
College-bound juniors should consider taking the PSAT/NMSQT, which is the best preparation for the SAT and entry into the National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs. It is an optional exam that measures critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills that are important for success in college. Students do not have to recall facts from literature, history, science, or math formulas. This test measures reasoning and critical thinking skills.

All students who take the PSAT/NMSQT will receive an official score report. They will receive scores for critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills and will see how their score compares to those of other students across the country. Students will be able to see which answers they got right or wrong. They will also receive information about how they performed on specific academic skills.

Students who take the test will receive free access to My College QuickStart, an online college and planning tool that contains an online PSAT/NMSQT Score Report; a customized SAT Study Plan; a personality test; and personalized lists of colleges, majors, and careers. For more information, visit www.collegeboard.org .

Registration for the PSAT is due Friday, October 9 at 3:00pm in the Student Services Office. The cost for the PSAT is $20 and checks should be made payable to HUHS. The exam will be given on Wednesday, October 14 from 7:25am to 11:00am. At the time of registration, students will be given a student guide that includes test-taking tips and a practice test.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Student Services Office at 670-3200, ext. 214 or [email protected].
