On Fri., Oct 30, 2015 (8am-12pm) we will welcome Pat Toth from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for a keynote talk, and attendees will participate in an interactive session, hear from university panelists, and connect with resources.

- How to guard against the embarrassment, legal liability or decreased productivity of security breaches
- How to evaluate security tools and techniques based on your needs

Hosted by VirginiaBIO, James Madison University, the Shenandoah Valley Partnership and public and private, together they highlight education and industry innovations in the biotech arena in the Shenandoah Valley.
This event will bring together businesses engaged in the bio sector, regional research assets and academic partners, marketing and economic development professionals to highlight exciting bio innovations in the Shenandoah Valley and the surrounding region. Attendees will discuss current research and academic offerings related to bio at JMU, Blue Ridge Community College, and other workforce partners, and identify opportunities for networking, collaboration and business development. The day will end with a casual Beer & Biotech event in downtown Harrisonburg.
JMU offers the state's only undergraduate biotechnology degree, and the Valley is home to leading bio companies making advancements in human and animal health, agricultural and industrial bio, health care delivery and manufacturing. Improving the Problem Solution Generation Process

Organizations and individuals are always trying to solve analytical and/or creative problems. Far too often, the process of brainstorming is relied on as the primary method to help identify potential solutions. However, there are more powerful options available that are more rigorous and typically generate a greater number of possibilities that are likely to be more potent and reliable.
This 1-day workshop will present several additional options that can provide triggers to improve the solution generation process by thinking about a system from different perspectives.
About the Workshop Leader: Duke Okes has worked in the quality profession for more than 35 years, first as a quality engineer with TRW Automotive, and since 1985 as an independent consultant, trainer, speaker and author. He is an ASQ Fellow, is ASQ CMQ/OE, CQE and CQA certified, and holds degrees in technology, business and education. He is the author of two books covering some of the core skills for process management, "Root Cause Analysis: The Core of Problem Solving and Corrective Action" and "Performance Metrics: The Levers for Process Management," as well as dozens of articles on these and other quality management topics.

Lenhart Pettit PC is pleased to announce that Jennifer E. Shirkey, of our Harrisonburg office, has begun her term as Chair of the Virginia State Bar's Trusts & Estates Section for 2015-16. (

Jennifer leads the Trusts and Estates Section of the State Bar which is comprised of over 1,800 estate planning attorneys and which promotes the statewide exchange of ideas among estate planners. The Section's activities include publishing regular newsletters and organizing a continuing legal education seminar in 3 locations across Virginia each fall. It
recently co-sponsored a free health care directive training webinar for over 80 lawyers. Attendees pledged to accept referrals from a nonprofit legal aid organization to prepare a health care directive for a client free of charge. Jennifer has been a member of the Section's board since 2012.
Jennifer concentrates her practice in estate planning, employee benefits, tax, and business law. She assists families and individuals with their trust and estate needs daily and serves as an Assistant Commissioner of Accounts for Harrisonburg & Rockingham County.

CIT Announces Demo Day for EMERGE Wearable Technology Program
CIT and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Demo Day to showcase companies that are creating innovative wearable technology for first responders
September 10, 2015 (HERNDON, Va.) - The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) announced today that this year's EMERGE Accelerator program will culminate with a Demo Day in San Francisco on September 23
rd. The EMERGE program is a unique public-private partnership that was launched earlier this year to help speed the delivery of the latest innovative wearable technologies for first responders.
The Demo Day will showcase the entrepreneurs who have participated in the EMERGEprogram as they present their companies to a group of accredited investors and other government and industry stakeholders from across the county. Participating companies include several startups from the TechWildcatters Accelerator, along with a number of more mature early stage companies from the TechNexus Venture Collaborative. The event will showcase a wide range of innovative technologies such as mouth guards that use bone conduction technology for communication; devices for sensory impaired users that can help first responders locate people in challenging environments; a triage language translator for patients to communicate with first responders; and protective gloves with embedded equipment controls to remotely control devices.
The program, a partnership of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and CIT, is part of a larger DHS S&T initiative to engage entrepreneurs and their innovative ideas and technologies for the homeland security mission. CIT selected two business accelerators
Tech Wildcatters, of Dallas, Tx. and
TechNexus, of Chicago, Il. to discover and foster innovative individuals and companies with commercial wearable technology for first responder operations. Both TechNexus and Tech Wildcatters held individual events in their respective cities over the past few weeks to showcase the participating companies.
Pete Jobse, CIT President and CEO, said, "CIT's mission for 30 years has been to drive innovation and entrepreneurship to solve societal challenges and create new economic opportunities. This partnership with DHS S&T is a continuation of our efforts, and we are honored to be a part of their innovative procurement efforts, as they find the latest wearable technologies to help our first responders."

Shenandoah Valley Workforce Development Board
The Shenandoah Valley Workforce Development Board is the designated Regional Workforce Convener of business, economic development, education, and human services agencies to focus on community workforce issues and the development of solutions for a skilled labor force at the regional level. The SVWDB is the federal recipient of federal job training funds for 16 localities in Northwestern Virginia operating job training programs in five Valley Workforce Centers. The SVWDB actively seeks additional funding to support numerous workforce initiatives to advance the region/s workforce. Valley OJT is one such innovative workforce solution that has provided over $2.4 million in federal grant funding to employers as wage subsidies for on-the-job training of new hires. The SVWDB has just received a $4 million federal grant to support registered apprenticeships to include providing funding to manufacturing businesses who create new apprenticeship programs.
