Great Places to Cycle:
Lambton County |
|
 Situated in Southwest Ontario,
Lambton County spans the southern coast of Lake Huron from Grand Bend to the St. Clair River, south to Lake St. Clair. With a rural hinterland and countryside that is relatively flat, longer rides along quieter county roads are popular with locals and visiting cyclists.
Located on the shores of Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, the city of Sarnia has a fantastic off-road trail and path system along the city's waterfront and throughout the community. Stop for a break at the bicycle friendly restaurant, cafes or brewery in town!
Beyond Sarnia, cyclists can stop and explore rural roads that connect small towns and villages rich in history of past and present. From Grand Bend, a popular beach holiday destination, cyclists can explore Pinery Provincial Park, along connecting off-road paved paths from town to the park that total 23km.
There is a planned 170km extension of the Waterfront Trail in 2015, from Lake St. Clair to Grand Bend, which will extend this signed cycling route and trail through Sarnia and Lambton County. If you didn't already know, road cycling in the
Kawartha-Northumberland area is exceptional! From challenging hill climbs and the rugged Canadian Shield, to waterways, rolling agricultural lands and flatter terrain. Two counties in the region completed signing road routes in 2015 and we can't wait to give them try!
Northumberland County
As shown in
Northumberland Tourism's 2015 Outdoor Adventure Map, the
5 on-road cycling routes totalling around 285km, now have wayfinding signs. Ranging from 30km-73km in length, the routes draw cyclists from the communities along Lake Ontario to the scenic shores along Rice Lake and the historic Trent Severn Waterway.
Cyclists can use a smartphone, tablet or GPS device by accessing the Google Map links or downloading the pdf route files for viewing online or to print. Visit Northumberland Tourism's website for full route information and details.
Peterborough & the Kawarthas
Officially known as 'The Peterborough and the Kawarthas Classics Road Cycling Routes', these routes range from 4km-100km and total nearly 300km of scenic rural roads along the three most dynamic and popular routes throughout Peterborough County.
The routes have been mapped out with two different route length options and with downloadable maps available online. These routes take riders off the beaten path, encouraging visitation to businesses throughout the region. All routes start and end in downtown Peterborough at Millennium Park tying into a number of trail systems in the city of Peterborough.

Bicycle Friendly Wineries in Ontario!
|
|
| There are now over 40 wineries in Ontario certified as bicycle friendly by the Ontario By Bike Network!  Many of these are located in the three major wine growing regions of Ontario of Niagara, Prince Edward County and Lake Erie-Essex County. There are, however, pioneering wineries emerging in newer wine growing regions in Ontario such as Grey, Lambton and Norfolk Counties, as well as in Durham Region. Plan a wine tour by bike this summer by using the 'Winery' category filter on the Ontario By Bike Map to help plot out your route. Have a corporate, birthday or another event to plan for? Consider a guided bicycle wine tour. Here are several bike tour operators who either offer wine tours or could possibly help plan a custom guided tour. Looking for more than a tasting? Some wineries offer delivery service to local accommodations and even residences further afield. If this isn't displayed anywhere at the winery, we suggest simply asking. Remember it can be dangerous to drink too much and cycle. Always drink responsibly. |

Cycling at Pan Am
|
|
The 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games is less than a month away! Head out to one of the four cycling competitions and watch the best amateur athletes compete for gold!
 BMX - Eight riders will compete on a track filled with jumps, tight bends, berms and obstacles. This one day event will be held on July 11 at 2pm at Centennial Park Pan Am BMX Centre. No tickets are available at this time. Check back frequently for late release ticket information.
 Mountain Biking - Watch the best mountain bikers in the Americas test their skills on runs named Boneshaker, Coffee Run and the Grunt Climb. This one day event takes place on July 12 at 10am, at Hardwood Mountain Bike Park . Click here for tickets details.
 Track Cycling - It's going to be fun to watch cyclists reach speeds of >80km/h on bikes equipped with one gear and no brakes on a timber track with two 42 degree banks! Competition takes place over 4 days between July 16-19 at the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome. No tickets available at this time. Check here frequently for late release ticket information.
 Road Cycling - Starting and finishing at Exhibition Place, this one day event is held on July 25 at 1:00pm. While this event is sold out (except for WC/Accessible tickets) there will be plenty of other locations you can cheer on the riders. Competition Route Map.
Broadcasts of the Pan/Parapan Am Games can be found on CBC, however the broadcast schedule has yet to be released.

We Challenge You to Inspire Us!

| If you haven't already done so, it's definitely time to start planning and taking your Ontario cycling trips for 2015. The weather is perfect (except for those few wet days!) and generally not too humid. Remember accommodations and availability at attractions fill up fast over the summer season, so stay ahead of the game and book early! Share pictures of your rides this season through email, on our Facebook Page, or tag them with the hashtag #OntarioByBike. We want to see what kind of riding your doing this season and want to be inspired by your ride experiences so that we can share them with others!
