Dear Dragons,

We have reached the time in the fall calendar where several sports are either ready to begin or have begun district play. Others are still continuing their pre-season journey. And some are on the verge of beginning their 2015 campaigns. We've got it all covered this week, so join the fun.

FOOTBALL:

The Dragons travelled to Tulsa, OK for the first ever out of state road game in school history. Mason Holmes made his first start at quarterback. Determined to avenge last year's bitter over time loss at AT&T stadium, Tulsa Union jumped out to a 23-7 half time lead. The lone highlight came on a Holmes to Zach Farrar touchdown pass.  The Dragons would roar back in the second half, however, behind 3 touchdowns from Sr. running back Shemar Coleman, 2 rushing and 1 receiving. His final touchdown on the evening would give the Dragons their first lead of the season with a score of 27-23. Union, as they often do in the series would answer back on a screen pass to Tyler Adkins for their final score of the evening. Adkins, Union's running back would finish with a 193 yards on the night. The Dragons would need one final rally. Facing a 3rd down, Holmes would find Lil' Jordan Humphrey down to the Union 45 yard line for a huge 1st down conversion to keep the drive alive. Despite having a 1st down Holmes would need several more key plays to find the end zone. The first of these would come on a 38 yard fade pass to Farrar. 1st and goal on the 3. Two plays later Lil' Jordan would find the end zone and give the Dragons the final score of the evening for the 34-30 final.

In his first start Mason Holmes went 26 of 39 for 336 yards. Lil'Jordan Humphrey also had 177 total yards, 88 rushing & 89 receiving. Zach Farrar was the leading receiver on the game with 107 yards. Coleman also chipped in 97 yards on the night while Holmes threw his first 2 career TD passes.

Robert Barnes led the defense in tackles with 16 total, 8 solo & 8 assist. John Miscoll also had 14 total tackles. IV Seacat chipped in 12.

With this dramatic victory - is there any other kind for SLC football - the team is now 1-1 on the season and will face the 1-1 Midland Lee Rebels.

They then concluded the non-district portion of the schedule with a 3 set sweep over Byron Nelson at home, 25-14, 26-24 & 25-17. LDVB is now 28-3 on the season and the next 13 matches bring the roller coaster ride that is 7-6A Volleyball play, widely regarded to be the toughest volleyball district in the state. They host LD Bell on Friday, September 11, at 6:30pm then travel to Richland on Tuesday, September 15th at 6:30pm.

They moved up one spot this week in the LoneStarVolleyball.com Texas Top 20 poll to No. 2, just behind top ranked Dripping Springs. They remain No. 1 for a second consecutive week in the TGCA poll.

CROSS COUNTRY:
Cross Country had its one and only home meet of the season which this year moved to Bob Jones Park due to the early spring rains at Meadowmere in Grapevine. The Varsity Elite team had a scheduled week off which allowed several Carroll under classmen runners to run on the biggest stage. The Varsity Girls took 3rd place while the Varsity Boys took 7th.

Thank you to the volunteers who hosted over 2400 runners from 69 different schools.

Up next the Cross Country teams have an off week before returning to action. The top 24 boys and girls travel to the Javelina XC Invitational in Kingsville, Tx. on September 19th.  The remainder of the team will compete in Denton, Tx. at the Marcus 11, also on September 19th.

TENNIS:

null

Dragon Tennis hosted their annual Grill Out match in a one match week, shutting out the Colleyville Heritage Panthers 21-0. This runs their record to 7-3 on the 2015 Fall Varsity Tennis season. Up next Tennis will have an early morning match at home on Saturday, September 12th at 8:30am vs. Texas High. They then travel to Haltom for a return to 7-6A play Tuesday, September 15th at 4pm.
