Why Talk About Death?

Talking about death and end of life issues is probably the last thing most people are interested in doing. Many believe that it's sad, morbid and unpleasant. Perhaps that's why we have developed so many euphemisms for death: "He passed," "She is no longer with us," "he ate the banana," "kicked the bucket" or "crossed over." No matter what your preferred term may be, it is likely seen as more palatable and acceptable than using the "d" word.
At the recent health symposium on the topic of death convened by the College of Health and Social Services at New Mexico State University, Gail Rubin, who organized the death café during our lunch, reminded the audience of this important fact: "Talking about sex won't make you pregnant and talking about death won't make you dead."

- The Preliminary Program will be available in early November and will include information about registration, housing, and other important details including volunteer opportunities!
Opening and Closing Sessions
The Opening Session will feature clips from "Still Dreaming", a documentary that is filmed at the Lillian Booth Actor's Home in New Jersey. A portion of the film will be viewed followed by a panel discussion that includes the film making team, Hank Rogerson and Jilann Spitzmiller and the director of EngAGE, Tim Carpenter, and others who will interact with the audience around themes of artistic endeavors, images of aging and the continuity of one's life work.
For our Closing Session, we will welcome Fernando Torres-Gil, former Assistant Secretary on Aging in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Professor of Social Welfare, Professor of Public Policy, and Director of the Center for Policy Research on Aging at UCLA. Dr. Torres-Gil, a highly-respected scholar in gerontology and public policy, will speak about the legacy of our gerontological perspective and our collective future.
Mentoring with AGHE Fellows The meeting will offer a number of great networking and learning opportunities for students and emerging faculty. One such opportunity includes the session, Mentoring with AGHE Fellows. This event offers an informal networking session where participating AGHE Fellows host tables as mentors to give advice to students and emerging faculty. Mentors will be there to answer questions on a wide spectrum of topics related to career development in gerontology, including preparing for the job search and interviews, maintaining research and publications, curriculum development, community engagement, and more. Special Event - Long Beach Scenic Cruise
Enjoy a night exploring the beautiful shores of Long Beach by joining your colleagues on a scenic 2-hour long cruise. Chartered by Spirit Cruises, the cruise will traverse the banks of Long Beach, passing by unique landmarks like the historic Queen Mary and the Alamitos Bay area. Includes a full buffet with complimentary margaritas as well as soft drinks, coffee, and a cash bar. Please note, the cruise ship may not be accessible to all. If you have any mobility limitations, please reach out to meetings@aghe.org to see if the ship can accommodate your needs.

Resource Book of Best-Practice Activities
The Academic Program Development Committee of AGHE is working to create a resource book of best-practice activities for gerontology, geriatrics, and aging-studies instructors to use in their classrooms, community engagement/service-learning projects, and internship/practical experience courses.
We want to include your successful, original activity ideas! To submit an activity for consideration, please
complete this form, and provide a detailed description (for multiple activities, please submit each in a separate form).
Please submit your activities by October 30, 2015. Submissions will be blinded for peer review. If you have any questions, please contact Tina Kruger at

Gerontology Faculty Survey on Aging and Disability
Please consider participating in a survey of faculty members who teach courses on aging, old, age, and related topics. The survey aims to document the extent to which, and how, instructors are incorporating disability studies perspectives into their courses. Please consider responding even if you do not teach about disability and/or do not incorporate disability studies perspectives into your courses. You can complete the survey anonymously

The Membership Committee has been hard at work during the summer! First, let me take the time to thank Dr. Lynn Hodgson for all of her hard work on the Membership Committee! I would also like to thank the new/continuing members of the committee, for their hard work with Lynn and also for agreeing to assist with the committee's leadership transition! When you see one of the committee members please thank them for their service. This is a behind the scenes job, but a very important and necessary one for AGHE!
