Governor Christie's Police Appreciation Day...just another day in Trenton

On Monday, November 2, Governor Chris Christie hastily assembled a press event in Camden as an effort to upstage President Barack Obama and announced a bogus Police Appreciation Day for this past Thursday, November 5th.

Well, Thursday has come and gone. Our members of the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police are still waiting for the Governor's appreciation. I guess the Governor's  idea of a Police Appreciation Day is just a normal day in Trenton...doing nothing for law enforcement.

The Governor, in the last debate where he made it to the main stage, cavalierly declared his support and appreciation for law enforcement. The Governor actually said, " This coming Thursday we'll stand shoulder to shoulder. We're going to keep supporting you in every way we can."

Well...we are still waiting for that support and appreciation from this Governor. His motive behind declaring a Police Appreciation Day seemed to be one more desperate act to help him in his failing bid for President.

Yesterday, our Newark brothers and sisters held its 23rd Annual Blue Mass Ceremony to honor law enforcement, both the living and the deceased. Once again, our Governor did not participate in this event...not even on the day he designated as Police Appreciation Day.

Governor Christie is in his sixth year of office and the New Jersey FOP has not had one meeting with this Governor. Of course, he met with our leadership when he was candidate for Governor for his first term. But, we've had not one face-to-face meeting with him since he has taken office. Our organization, the largest in the country, represents more than 325,000 law enforcement officers. And...he wants our members nationwide to view him as a friend to law enforcement? We don't think so.

We call on Governor Christie to take his own words to heart. Really stand with us shoulder to shoulder. Meet with our organization's leadership. Fund our pension system. Support policies and laws that are helpful to first responders, including law enforcement officers. Stop deriding the honorable work of police officers. That Governor, is called appreciation.
