On behalf of Black History Studies, we extend our condolences to the family and friends of the great Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan who has passed on to the ancestors on Thursday 19th March 2015.
Dr Yosef ben-Jochannan, one of the last of the Harlem activist-intellectuals of the 20th century-those fiery, independent scholars who taught classical African history and shaped it into a sword against white supremacy. He was 96. Dr Yosef Ben-Jochannan was an Egyptologist. Having taught at Cornell University for over 15 years, Dr. Ben, as he is affectionately known, has lectured widely on both sides of the Atlantic. Perhaps the high regard he enjoys today stems from his long, unwavering theme that the ancient civilizations along the Nile were African.
Dr. Yosef Ben-Jochannan aka Dr. Ben is the author of 49 books, primarily on ancient Nile Valley civilisations and their impact on Western cultures. One of Dr. Ben's most thought-provoking works, "African Origins of the Major 'Western Religions" (1970), highlights how the roots of Judaism, Christianity and Islam originated in Africa. He also argues that the original Hebrews were from Ethiopia and were Africans, while the European Jews later adopted the Hebrew faith and its customs. To purchase his books, click here

Everyday racism:

Racism is a business. Its marketing is so successful that even Akala looks sideways at a young black man holding a lot of cash. These racial assumptions lead to 'everyday' racism - daily encounters and micro-agressions. It's time to recognise the relationship between top-down propaganda and the bias that we all carry.

Before They Die: The True Story of the Survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot'

It was the worst race riot in the history of the United States; however, most people have never heard of it. Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1921, in less than 24 hours the prosperous African-American section of Greenwood, also known as "Black Wall Street," was completely destroyed.
An estimated 300 were killed and over 10,000 people displaced, as a 42 square block area of their homes and businesses were burned to the ground by a white mob that had been deputized by the sheriff. This documentary is the story of the survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot and their quest for justice.

JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH EVENT
Lady Sings the Blues: 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Billie Holiday

The legendary American jazz vocalist was born on 7th April 1915 in Philadelphia and died in 1959 in New York City at age of 44.
This event is to commemorate the 100th birthday of Billie Holiday who sparked mainstream acceptance of musical protest with the famous song 'Strange Fruit' and influenced a number of artists like Lena Horne, Kate Bush, Tina Turner, Macy Gray, Beyonce and Amy Winehouse.
We will be presenting some interesting facts about Billie Holiday and utilising rare TV and movie clips, along with commentary by a stellar group of jazz instrumentalists and singers who knew her well to explore the life of this jazz legend.

Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans

Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans is a riveting tale of hope, heartbreak and resiliency set in New Orleans' most fascinating neighborhood.
Faubourg Tremé is arguably the oldest Black neighborhood in America, the birthplace of the Civil Rights movement in the South and the home of jazz. While the Tremé district was damaged when the levees broke, this is not another Katrina documentary.
Every frame is a tribute to what African American communities have contributed even under the most hostile of conditions.. It is a film of such effortless intimacy, subtle glances and authentic details that only two native New Orleanians could have made it.
Long ago during slavery, Faubourg Tremé was home to the largest community of free Black people in the Deep South and a hotbed of political ferment. Here Black and white, free and enslaved, rich and poor co-habitated, collaborated, and clashed to create much of what defines New Orleans culture up to the present day. Founded as a suburb (or faubourg in French) of the original colonial city, the neighborhood developed during French rule and many families like the Trevignes kept speaking French as their first language until the late 1960's.
The film brims with unknown historical nuggets:
- Who knew that in the early 1800's, while most African Americans were toiling on plantations, free Black people in Tremé were publishing poetry and conducting symphonies.
- Who knew that long before Rosa Parks, Tremé leaders organised sit-ins and protests that successfully desegregated the city's streetcars and schools?
- Who knew that jazz, the area's greatest gift to America, was born from the embers of this first American Civil Rights movement.
