Knowing Others & Being Known

Relationships change everything. This service ties in directly with the wonderful exhibit in Stetson Gallery and so much of who and how we are called to be in this world.

We will be dedicating a second collection to the Family Diversity Project (FDP) on October 4th so please come early for a bit of breakfast before the service and commit to reading at least one of the stories before entering the sanctuary. And consider bringing a donation to the amazing group who created the Love Makes A Family exhibit. Coffee, juice and breakfast goodies will greet you upon your arrival that morning beginning at 9:30 am.

Sunday Seminar

the 4th, Jay Morrison will be presenting some of the harsh verbiage of talk radio. Please come, but bring your earplugs.
Sunday Seminar is open to all and nursery care is available. We gather at 8:45 am, begin at 9 am and are done in time to attend Sunday Service at 10:30 am.

The Celebration of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead's Three Hundredth Anniversary begins its fall program with a walking tour of the old town. Teaming with Old North Church, who is celebrating the 300th anniversary of Rev. Barnard's installation, the tours will include commentary about how our congregation separated from Old North and about 1700 Marblehead. Historian Judy Anderson will conduct the tours.

Special Meeting of the Congregation

Afro Flow Yoga

Afro Flow Yoga ~ Thanks to Nikki Moore and Deena Anderson, we're pleased to be bringing an exciting program to UUCM and our larger community. On Sunday, October 4 from 2:30-3:45 pm Afro Flow Yoga will engage participants in a 75 minute program intended to soothe body, mind and spirit. All ages and levels are welcome! No experience is necessary. Spaces are limited and there is a discount for pre-registration.

Ferry Beach Retreat ~
October 23 - 25 2015
Join us for a treasured UUCM experience as we head to Ferry Beach in Saco, ME for a weekend of retreat and connection! We join together as three congregations - Marblehead, Northboro & Haverhill to create one community in rest, play and life. We've found that many lasting relationships have been formed through this practice of annual retreat and we enjoy seeing new faces as well as seasoned attendees each year.

Volunteers needed for Panera Pick-up
Tuesday nights at 10 pm
Every week a volunteer stops by Panera Bread at 10 pm sharp to pick up their leftover donations. We use these for Sunday social hour and other activities like Youth Group and Lunch Bunch and also pass along donations to a variety of pantries and meal programs. Panera has a different group each day of the week. This past year was a test run to see if the program would work out for us and it did! Your minister and staff handled pick-ups last year and your PCAs (Pastoral Care Associates) took it on for the summer. Many thanks to all who participated. Now it's time to get more volunteers so the load is lighter! If you are able to help out an occasional Tuesday night at 10 pm or 6 am on Wednesday when Panera opens, please let us know.

A Story From The Deep North
Sunday, Oct 18, 2-4 pm
In this 86-minute-long film, Katrina Browne discovers that her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine cousins retrace the Triangle Trade and gain powerful new perspectives on the black/white divide.
The film is being offered by the Marblehead Racial Justice Team and will also include a brief commentary from David Pettee, a local UU who also traced his history back to the slave trade and went on to meet some African American descendants related to him through that history. This event is FREE and open to everyone!

Come join the minister for lunch! Each month we gather for a business-free time of pure fellowship and fine dining! You need bring nothing other than yourself and you are welcome to bring others! Grounds Clean Up Day
Nov. 7, 9am - 12pm
We going to have a Grounds Clean Up Day on Nov. 7, from 9-12, more or less. Your choice of chores will include: some work on the gutters (ladders to be provided), cutting away the bushes from the perimeter of the building so the new paint has a chance to breathe, cutting and gathering the brush against the back wall, tree trimming, leaf raking, and setting up for the concert which is scheduled that evening (details to follow). Other chores will be added. Bring gloves, wear work clothes, and bring tools and rakes though we have some. We have a nice looking building; lets keep it that way!!!!!!!!!
It is possible Nov. 14 will be added as part 2 if the weather does not cooperate or if the list becomes too long or if we just want to keep working..."

Your Basket Ladies, Linda and Jo Ann, have signed up for their 150th year of making Gift Baskets for our annual Red Bow Fair. Ok, not 150, but at least a dozen or so. (Editor's note: their baskets look even better than those pictured above!!!)
Because putting together our glorious, sumptuous, and best selling baskets is a long and labor intensive process, we are starting our organization process earlier this year. We hope this will avoid last minute panic attacks.
So: We are starting our Annual Plea earlier this year. We will be putting up our Giving Tree next month, but would like to get a head start. Those of you who have been around a while know what that means, but we have some lovely new folks as well. Briefly, these are a few of the things that we ask the UUCM congregation to donate so Gift Baskets can be pure profit. Please note that since we make the baskets to be sold as holiday gifts, all donated items must be new. And of course, cash or check donations are very welcome

Spirit Circles ~
Deepening our spirituality requires a willingness to move into soulful reflection and share with others. Spirit Circles facilitate doing so with fellow seekers here at UUCM.
Each Circle will meet with the minister for a total of fourteen sessions. We will be using the books heart to heart and soul to soul by Christine Robinson & Alicia Hawkins. Although the Spirit Circles will operate much like our existing small group ministries, these groups will dissolve after the final session. At the core of these gatherings will be a commitment to hear other people and the knowledge that you will be heard, uninterrupted and in an atmosphere of interest, affirmation and care. These circles are ways to know one another and ourselves. I hope everyone will consider joining. Each group will be limited to 10 people but those on a waiting list will be able to join the next available offerings. Click here for topics and meeting time options.

Stetson Gallery reopens for the 2015-2016 gallery season with a beautifully moving exhibit, "Love Makes a Family." The exhibit will hang throughout the months of September and October, and the opening reception will be held Sunday, Sept. 13, from noon-2 p.m. "Love Makes a Family" is a photo-text exhibit featuring the images and words of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people and their families. The exhibit consists of 20 framed photographs accompanied by interview te

The exhibit was created by Family Diversity Projects, a non-profit organization devoted to educating the public about issues related to the diversity of family life. Family Diversity Projects creates photo-text exhibits and books in order to help eliminate prejudice, stereotyping, name-calling, and harassment of people who are discriminated against due to race, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, size, and mental or physical ability.
Because FDP is a not-for-profit organization, it requests a donation minimum from all venues, plus a commitment to cover the significant costs it incurs to ship the exhibit to the venue.
Stetson Gallery will therefore be conducting a fund raising effort to raise the funds FDP has requested. Checks may be made payable to UUCM, with
Stetson Gallery in the memo line. The co-curators appreciate all donations!

Appreciation
The paint isn't the only thing that's new this month! Thank you to Sheila Donovan and her energetic new floral assistant Stathis Stratis! Sheila has been designing our floral boxes for many years and is also the architect behind the gorgeous holiday displays we enjoy each year in the sanctuary. Stathis is a new member who volunteered to water the flower boxes but has now been outed as having a great touch when it comes to putting them together as well! Thank you to both for their efforts.

Emma's Revolution is confirmed for Saturday, November 7th at 8 pm. You may remember this wonderful group from earlier concerts and/or Rev. Wendy and Gini von Courter's wedding. They are long-time friends of UUCM and their concerts are always a treat. This one will benefit the Peter Wanka Ferry Beach Scholarship Fund.
