NAMI had announced the award of five-year grants to promote research in serious mental illness in two of the nation's leading university departments of psychiatry.

"One of the most important things about the grants is that our NAMI Research Fellows will help individuals who live with serious mental illnesses and their families feel more connected to research," said NAMI Medical Director Ken Duckworth, M.D. "We're confident both academic centers chosen will do an excellent job bringing the development and practice of research to life for people impacted by mental illness."

New York Times Features NAMI Medical Director in Article About NIMH Study on New Approaches to Schizophrenia

The New York Times writes about the NIMH study, also detailed in the NIMH section, which calls into question the long-established belief that the best way to treat someone with schizophrenia is with strong doses of antipsychotic drugs that blunt hallucinations and delusions but can come with unbearable side effects, like severe weight gain or debilitating tremors.

The NIMH trial concluded that schizophrenia patients who received smaller doses of antipsychotic medication and a bigger emphasis on one-on-one talk therapy and family support made greater strides in recovery over the first two years of treatment than patients who got the usual drug-focused care.

Representative Tim Murphy Implores House Members to Support Minority Mental Health

On October 21st, Congressman Tim Murphy (R-PA) took to the House floor to implore members to wake up to minority mental health and support his bipartisan Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis Act, H.R. 2646 , which provides treatment to individuals with serious mental illness in underserved populations.

Murphy's legislation targets minority mental health by authorizing for the first time in law the Minority Fellowship Program to increase the number of minority mental health providers. Further, the legislation provides alternatives to institutionalization and boosts the number of in-patient psychiatric beds. Additionally, the bill eliminates the two-day doctor rule, which prohibits a patient from seeing two doctors in one day. For minority families this regulation change is vital as it's incredibly challenging for a low-income family to find time off from work to get their loved one to another doctor.

"Our mental health system is abusive and neglectful to those with a serious mental illness. Worse yet, those policies disproportionately impact minorities and the poor," said Murphy. "If you are a minority or low income and have a serious mental illness you will likely end up in prison where 80 percent of inmates don't receive treatment."

1 in 3 Children with Mental Health Needs
Only See a Pediatrician

Powerful Photo Series Shows Mental Illness
Doesn't Discriminate

Dior Vargas, who is a self-described Latina feminist, has started a photo project designed to end the stigma and discrimination of minority people living with mental illness. Vargas believes that the media narrates mental illness around white people while leaving out persons of other ethnicities and she is working to end that separation and get equal help and awareness for everyone. Her project features more than sixty photos of people holding signs with their names, their illness, and if they wish, an inspiring message.
