Policymaker Interview Series: Rep. Lamar Smith, Chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology
The Coa lition interviewed Representative Lamar Smith on hi s role in shaping the STEM Education Act, which  focuses on improving STEM education fields in federal progra ms, with special focus on computer science. The STEM Education Coalition would like to thank Chairman Smith for sitting down with the Coalition to discuss the legislation.

Education Week
The pending departure of Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, the speaker of the House, seems to have lit a fire under negotiations on reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. In fact, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said Monday that it could actually "help" ESEA's chances if Boehner stuck around for a few more weeks.

The White House
The 2015 White House Astronomy Night is bringing together students, teachers, astronomers, engineers, scientists, and space enthusiasts of all ages for an opportunity to stargaze from the South Lawn of the White House. Participants will also engage in hands-on science activities, including building model miniature satellites, peering at the planets and stars with different telescopes, and exploring samples of rocks from the Moon, Mars, and meteorites.

That's the biggest federal program for high schools, and it has fans on both sides of the aisle. It last got a facelift in 2006.
Science is Cool In 'The Martian.' Can It Be Compelling In the Classroom, Too?

Cool science: an oxymoron? Not according to thousands of moviegoers who have been mesmerized by "The Martian," in which an astronaut uses his science and math skills to survive being marooned on Mars. "I'm going to have to science the s- out of this," he declares. It is riveting stuff. If only we could translate this kind of suspense and excitement to the science classroom.

On November 1st, National Geographic Channel, in partnership with GE, will premiere Breakthrough, a revolutionary new series about scientific discoveries that will change our lives in the immediate future and beyond. Breakthrough explores lifesaving and mind-boggling innovation in brain science, longevity, water, energy, pandemics and cyborg technology. The series follows some of the world's leading scientists and captures the courage, imagination and sacrifice behind their remarkable breakthroughs.

Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship (AEF) Program
The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowship (AEF) Program provides a unique opportunity for accomplished K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) educators to serve 11 months in a Federal agency or U.S. Congressional office. Einstein Fellows bring their extensive classroom knowledge and experience to their host offices to inform Federal STEM education efforts.

Aviation Pros Kids Aviation Adventure Weekend 

Aerospace Discovery Weekend is a 3-day youth aerospace adventure held on the SUN 'n FUN Convention Campus to introduce young men and women to the dynamic world of aviation. Youth groups will find unique opportunities ranging from an astronaut's presentation to learning how the science of sports relates to flying an airplane. 
    
The Porcupine Project
Follow the Bayfront Maritime Center as they take on rebuilding and designing the historic Lake Erie Schooner Porpcupine. Porcupine's mission will be sailing as the Schoolship for Presque Isle Bay, a hands-on sailing STEM classroom and historic regional attraction.

$1.5 million Goes to Engage Youth in Computational Inquiry in STEM
A new partnership between the UW, TAF and TAF Academy receives $1.5 million from the National Science Foundation (NSF) STEM+C program to bring together interdisciplinary, project based STEM learning.
