As we enter the half term break may I thank you for the continued support you have given us as a school in these first few weeks and in particular for the many kind welcome letters and emails I have personally received from you. I can honestly say that even after such a short period of time I am proud to be working with such committed staff, supportive parents and most importantly an outstanding student body that never fail to impress me with their attitudes, abilities and support for one another. I am confident that our young people will continue to develop throughout the year and I am excited by some of the developments that we have started to plan for the future.

Communication is key in establishing a strong partnership between home and school and as such from next half term we will be introducing a fortnightly correspondence to keep you updated with any school activities, clubs and general information. It is my belief that students attending Perins School are among the best in the country and as such we will be celebrating their successes at every opportunity. Please keep us informed of any activities or successes outside of school so that we may share in your pride.

Our students deserve the best possible publicity and alongside this I ask that we work together to eliminate any negative perceptions within the community. I am aware that, although uniform has become a real strength within the school, often students take less pride once they have left the school campus, untucking shirts, loosening or removing ties and shortening skirts. I would not like these aspects to paint a picture of our students that is not representative of them, though often it is these comments that I hear within the community. I therefore ask for your assistance in ensuring that their pride is evident in their uniform both inside and outside of school. It is this positive reputation that will ensure that when they leave Perins they do so not only with the academic excellence we encourage but also with a reputation that will be recognised when applying for jobs and college places.

After half term we will be implementing a new whole school marking and assessment policy. We will encourage students to play an active role in the process and ensure that they are fully aware of their current working level, and what they are capable of, with clear specific targets for each subject, to allow them to progress to the next stage of their learning. As part of this process, we will require students to use black pens for their classwork as other colours will be used within the marking, assessment and feedback framework. Could I ask that all students are therefore equipped, among other equipment, with a black pen for all lessons. In addition, we will be actively encouraging parents to engage in dialogue with your child and periodically to provide comment within their class-books. I am confident that it is this level of partnership working that will ensure optimal success for our young people.

I look forward to meeting with you as the year progresses and wish you and your child a safe and pleasant half term break.
Kind regards,

Steve Jones
