Dr. Nicholas Brozović
to join the Daugherty Water for Food Institute as Director of Policy
We're pleased to announce that Dr. Nicholas Brozović, a leading water economist with significant experience in Nebraska and around the world, has been appointed as the institute's director of policy effective July 1, 2014.
Dr. Brozović is currently an associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on using economic analysis to understand spatial, dynamic natural resource systems, with a special emphasis on water resources.

Student and Postdoc Funding Available
We are pleased to announce that the Daugherty Water for Food Institute will award up to $310,000 in student and postdoc support during FY 2014-2015. Both DWFI Faculty Fellows and Faculty Affiliates are eligible to apply for undergraduate scholar and graduate research assistantship support. Applications are due April 23.

There's still time to register for the 40th annual Center for Great Plains Studies symposium. The 2014 symposium is a collaboration with the National Drought Mitigation Center and the Robert B. Daugherty Water for Food Institute. It features over 40 distinguished speakers, including Ian Frazier, The New Yorker; Richard Hornbeck, Harvard University; Erwin de Nys and Nathan Engle, World Bank; Jason Clay, World Wildlife Fund; Michelle Podgornik, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and Theib Oweis, International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas.
The final Heuermann Lecture of the 2013-2014 season will be held on Tuesday, April 22nd at 3 p.m. at the East Campus Union. Entitled "The Role of Water and Food Security in Early Childhood Survival and Development: A Global Perspective," the lecture will feature a conversation with Dr. Chris Elias, president of the Global Development Program, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Dr. Joan Lombardi, former deputy assistant secretary and inter-departmental liaison for early childhood education, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and Dr. Nurper Ulkuer, former head, Early Childhood Development Unit, and senior adviser for early childhood development, UNICEF. Dr. Marjorie Kostelnik, dean, UNL College of Education and Human Sciences and Dr. Helen Raikes, Willa Cather Professor, UNL Dept. of Child, Youth and Family Studies will moderate the panel.
