HEC Grand Opening
The Santa Fe Higher Education Center (HEC) held its ribbon cutting on January 14th. The HEC -- created in partnership with Santa Fe Community College, New Mexico Highlands University, University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and the Institute of American Indian Arts was developed to use the resources of the schools more efficiently and effectively. Students who are eager for affordable higher education have access to multiple programs close to home and the convenience of earning an associates degree and then transferring to one of the four-year partner institutions right here in Santa Fe. The HEC's convenient location at the corner of Siringo and Yucca Roads in Santa Fe makes it easier for local students to attend classes.

The HEC building has 34,000 square feet on a four acre lot, accommodating 15 classrooms, a learning lab, and two flexible instructional spaces. Over 80% of its power comes from solar energy. The building cost approximately $12 million, funded by a 2010 Bond Issue.
Following the ceremony, attendees were treated to refreshments, entertained by Mariachi Sonidos del Monte, given tours of the facility, and participated in activities hosted by the partner institutions.

IAIA Community Gathering
On January 29th, IAIA held its first Community Gathering of 2015. The IAIA staff, faculty, and students who attended enjoyed a wonderful meal and were treated to a showing of student films, presented by James Lujan, Department Chair for Cinematic Arts.

ASG President Jamelyn Ebelacker spoke about the upcoming AIHEC Student Conference at the Albuquerque Convention Center, March 18-22, and the art competition that will be taking place.
Nocona Burgess, Student Activities Coordinator, also highlighted some of the upcoming AIHEC Student Conference competitions and activities.

The New IAIA Disc Golf Course
The IAIA Disc Golf Course is now open to the IAIA community. The disc golf course offers a fun, healthy, and lifelong recreational opportunity for IAIA and the surrounding community. Developed as a component of the the Health and Wellness curriculum, disc golf is a game that can be played by all ages and genders. The project was funded by the ASG, Health and Wellness Department, and the President's Office.
The course is a prime example of high desert disc golf. Rolling hills and subtle elevation change are prominent features as the course progresses among groves of cedar, juniper, and cacti. The front nine - known as the "Short Loop"- was designed as an instructional par 28 course. In contrast, the back nine, or "Long Loop" is a par 33 design and features epic views of the Sangre de Cristo mountains.
Major projects still to be completed before opening the course to the public include: installing overview maps and signage, flagsticks and flags, setting alternate pin positions, and clearing debris from the greens. A digital GPS map of the course can be found on the UDisc app for iOS and Android. Paper maps, along with discs for rent, are available in the Fitness Center. The first tee box is located west of the community garden. Rules and more information on disc golf can be found on the website of the Professional Disc Golf Assocation, http://pdga.com.
Organized Activities for the spring 2015 semester include:
- Instructional Rounds-Every Tuesday at 4 pm on the First Tee - Open to all students, faculty, and staff
- Weekly Doubles League
The IAIA course is a private disc golf venue. Annual memberships are free to the IAIA community and will be sold to outside players for $50.00 per person, beginning in March. All money generated by the disc golf course benefits the IAIA Associated Student Government.

NIKE DESERT JOURNEY COLLECTION HONORS ARIZONA'S SALT RIVER PIMA COMMUNITY
To honor the location of this year's big game, Nike enlisted the talents of O'odham tribe member and IAIA alumnus Dwayne Manuel, (BFA '10) who specializes in drawing and graffiti art and resides in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian community in southern Arizona. Manuel's design for Nike Sportswear's new Desert Journey collection interprets two traditional symbols, the war shield and the whirlwind, which together reflect Manuel's heritage and illustrate the modern competitor's long, battle-filled journey to reach the final destination. Dwayne spoke of his creative process: "My inspiration came from three themes: speed, journey, competition," said Manuel, who grew up playing football and has a deep appreciation and love of the game. "I based the Desert Journey graphic on traditional designs that are used to decorate basketry and weaponry - two everyday objects that are passed down from generation to generation, and when viewed from a different perspective, relate perfectly to the traits of the modern competitor."
NINETEEN ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY ARE NAMED 2015 ARTIST IN BUSINESS LEADERSHIP FELLOWS
First People Fund is pleased to announce the artists receiving the 2015 Artist in Business Leadership Fellowship. The fellows represent mid-career artists who have demonstrated a commitment to pursue their art as a career. Included in this year's list of winners is IAIA aumnus Dyani White Hawk Polk (Sicangu Lakota) . "This year's Artist in Business Leadership fellows come from all over the country, and bring a wide array of backgrounds to our organization and the communities we partner with," said Miranne Walker, program officer. "From traditional to contemporary arts, and wood carving, beadwork, and silk screening, they represent artists who are doing exciting, innovative work."
Paul C. Moore (Chickasaw), IAIA Visual Arts Technician, (and IAIA alumnus), is featured on Chickasaw.tv, the online video network. His profile, which includes a short biography and video, can be found on their Arts and Humanities channel: https://www.chickasaw.tv/arts/list/paul-moore. It is also featured on their home page under Profiles of a Nation.
The 22nd Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale opened with the traditional Red Carpet Reception, a get-together that is expected to raise about $1 million for the National Western Scholarship Trust. Guests at the Red Carpet Reception included Best in Show winner IAIA alumnus Brent Greenwood, who specializes in contemporary Native American art and is a member of the Chickasaw and Ponca Indian nations of Oklahoma. His piece "Native Sisters" was the Best in Show winner. The 2014 Coors Western Art Show & Sale generated $1.14 million in ticket and art sales, with the net proceeds going to scholarships supporting "the next generation of agribusiness and rural medical leaders."

New Additions to the IAIA Family
Alvin Sandoval (Navajo) returned to IAIA in January 2015 as the new full-time Shuttle Driver, reporting to James Mason, Facilities Director. Alvin worked for IAIA from 1990 to 2008 in various positions -- mail clerk, shuttle driver, and maintenance tech.
Manuel Caballero has joined IAIA as a Custodial Tech, part of the Facilities Department Team, reporting to James Mason, Facilities Director. Manuel joins IAIA with 10+ years of custodial experience working for large facilities which includes Santa Fe Unified School District and St. Vincent's Hospital.

IAIA Special Announcement from the President
On behalf of the IAIA Scholarship Committee, I am pleased to announce that Terran Kipp, an enrolled member of the Blackfeet Nation of Montana, has been selected as IAIA's 2015 Student of the year. This award is sponsored by the American Indian College Fund. Terran is a senior at IAIA majoring in Museum Studies with a minor in Studio Arts. Terran has maintained a high academic grade point average while also engaging in leadership and community service activities.
Please join me in congratulating Terran as IAIA's Student of the Year.
