During the recent AIHEC Student Conference held in Albuquerque in March -- IAIA brought home the Gold!  And Silver!  And just about every other award that was given.

IAIA had 55 overall award winners -- including 33 of the 46 Art awards, with a total of 13 1st place prizes.

Our Students also scored 2nd place in the Poetry Slam, 3rd place in the Hand Games, 3rd place in Volleyball, and 1st place in Women's Archery!

Additional awards included 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Traditional Plants, 3rd place in the 1-act Theater competition, 2nd place for solo drama and solo humor -- plus 7 top writing awards in the Tribal College Journal writing competition.

The Taos Shortz Film Fest featured the works of IAIA students during its "Native American Showcase" -- Thursday, March 19, 2015 -- at the Taos Community Auditorium, 144 Paseo Del Pueblo Norte, Taos, New Mexico.  

Curated and Hosted by James Lujan, Department Chair, Cinematic Arts and Technology, IAIA, the showcase included short films by several IAIA students.  

One of the students, Razelle Benally (Oglala Lakota/Navajo), won the Free Spirit Award at the Festival for her film "Bye Bye, Ronnie." 

Another student, Echota Killsnight, (Northern Cheyenne/Cherokee) had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand for a screening of his short film "Malevolent" at the Maoriland Film Festival.

According to James Lujan. "It was great to have IAIA connecting with a wider audience through this festival."

Candice Hopkins (Tlingit) is the new Chief Curator of the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, reporting to Patsy Phillips (Museum Director). Candice comes to the Museum with 14+ years of curatorial experience. She holds an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, where she was awarded the Ramapo Curatorial Prize for the exhibition Every Stone Tells a Story: The Performance Work of David Hammons and Jimmie Durham.  Candice's office is located in the Museum (downtown) and her extension is 428.5922.

Matthew Eaton is the new Sculpture Tech, for the Allan Houser Haozous Sculpture & Foundry Building, and will be reporting directly to Charlene Teters, Interim Academic Dean. Matthew comes to IAIA with 6.5 years of foundry experience in addition to 6+ years of commercial and residential ironworks in the Albuquerque area. Matthew's workstation is located in the Foundry Building and his extension is 424.2367.

New Mural In Caf?

IAIA Student Daniel McCoy (Muscogee Creek & Potawatomi from Oklahoma) and IAIA Alumna Topaz Jones (Shoshone/Lummi from Duck Vally Nevada) created a mural for the IAIA Caf?, entitled:

"Romanticized Indian Taco, Rest in Peace"

With the healthier options available at the caf?, and IAIA's commitment to better eating and lifestyles for our students, Daniel felt that it was time to put the legendary Indian Taco to rest -- at least in a ceremonial way.

Dr. Martin's remarks reinforced the school's intention to provide healthy food, sourced locally by our vendor Bon App?tit -- to help our students develop and continue healthy eating habits throughout their lives.
