UMSON Hosts Nurse Anesthesia Information Session
UMSON partnered with the Diversity in Nurse Anesthesia Mentorship Program to hold a Diversity CRNA Information Session and Airway Simulation Lab Workshop August 7-9 at the School of Nursing. More than 100 participants attended the event to learn about UMSON's nurse anesthesia specialty, the admissions process, interview skills, didactic courses, clinical expectations, and more.

Docents Needed for Living History Museum
The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday and Tuesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such as school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Scheduling is flexible. Welcome New Faculty
Elfleta Nixon, DNP '11, RN , has joined the Department of Family and Community Health as a clinical instructor in Rwanda. She previously served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps as a nurse practitioner and manager, as well as a clinical nurse educator for child and human developmental disabilities at Georgetown University. Nixon holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from UMSON and has taught at Delaware State and Bowie State Universities.
 
Qun (Charlie) Li, MD, PhD , has joined the Department of Pain and Translational Symptom Science as a research associate. He comes to UMSON from John Hopkins University School of Medicine where he worked as a research associate in the Department of Neuroscience and Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research. He holds a PhD in Neurobiology from the Ohio State University and a MD from Beijing Medical University, China.
 
Kimbery Pierre, MSc, RN, CCRN, has joined the Department of Family and Community Health as a clinical instructor in Rwanda. She comes to UMSON from the Opioid Treatment Program in New York, where she worked as an assistant nurse manager. Pierre has volunteered for Mama Hope Rescue Center in Kenya and Haiti, and taught in Ethiopia and Spain. She holds an MSc degree from Philadelphia University and a BSN from St. Louis University.
 
Isabelle Soule, PhD, RN, has joined the Department of Family and Community Health as a clinical instructor in Rwanda. She comes to UMSON from the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) School of Nursing, where she was an assistant professor. Soule was also an advisor to the director and senior lecturer at the University of Rwanda Byumba and Nyarugenge campus. She holds a PhD from OHSU.

Gregory D. Raymond, MS '10, MBA, BSN '05, RN , was appointed to the Maryland State Board of Nursing by Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. Raymond is director of nursing and patient care services for clinical practice, professional development, neuroscience, and behavioral health at University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and is the only nurse from UMMC or UMSON on the state board. Robin Remsburg, PhD '94, APRN, FNGNA, FGSA, FAAN , and Carol A. Romano, PhD '93, MS '85, BSN '77, NEA, FAAN, FACMI, completed the AACN-Wharton Executive Leadership Program, designed exclusively for top academic leaders in schools of nursing. They were among 40 academic nurse leaders selected to participate in the competitive program. Remsburg is dean and professor, Community Practice Nursing, University of North Carolina Greensboro, and  Romano is dean and professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Click here to read more.

UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshops, mock interviews, and online resources. There is also an annual career fair to help job seekers. Linda Costa, PhD, BSN '76, RN NEA-BC, assistant professor, presented, "Crowd Science: Magnet® Hospitals Collaborate to Define Discharge Models of Care," at the Sigma Theta Tau International Research Congress, held July 27-29, in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Marian Grant, DNP '10, RN, CRNP, associate professor, completed her fellowship in the office of Leader Nancy Pelosi on August. 21. She will extend the fellowship when she joins the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Hospice demonstration project on September 1. The project will be a test for allowing Medicare beneficiaries to receive both hospice and disease-modifying treatment concurrently. Grant will be a content expert developing marketing materials for participating hospices to enroll patients more quickly. Click here to read more.
