Dear Devotees,

Forgiveness.  Everyone knows forgiveness is the right thing to do, but how to do it?  Thinking about forgiveness is like thinking of light in a darkened room.  It has no effect.  To forgive others, fill the mind with God.  Then forgiveness comes automatically. All the spiritual practices are aimed in this direction.

This week, the Temple needs the following items:

  • TIL OIL (sesame oil), used daily for dipams for God.- 5 litres per week.
  • Chips small packets (50 bags per box @Costco or Sams Club) to feed the homeless on Sundays.  3 boxes needed by Saturday (150).
  • Jars of jam (for sandwich seva). 6 per week used.
  • 200 water bottles - for Sunday Sandwich Seva, drop at the kitchen by Saturday.
  • Prasad for Thursday - to offer to Sri Sai, at 6:30pm & 8pm.
  • Nuts - any type of nuts, given as prasad to devotees coming for darshan.
  • Devotees may drop off any donated food items in the kitchen pantry/closet.  If the kitchen or pantry is closed, leave outside the door.  Thanks to the many people who donate food items to the temple!
With loving regards,
Craig Sastry
FROM SAI BABA

Shirdi Sai Baba blessing There is no other species on earth as selfish as man.  He thinks of everything to be his own, weaves his life around it, lives in the illusion that it is real, assimilates wealth with sheer selfishness. The name of 'Sai' only can remove this feeling.
Quote of the Week

How Big is God?

Milky Way
The Milky Way bears a striking resemblance to Vishnu's Chakra
In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna says He is "bigger than the biggest and smaller than the smallest."  How big is big?  We consider the United States a very big country, but it is much smaller than countries like Russia or Canada.  It takes up only a small portion of the total surface of the Earth. Still, our sun is 109 times bigger than the Earth. We live in the Milky Way, which has some 300 billion suns, some smaller and some bigger than our own Sun.   Scientists estimate that the seen universe has some seventy billion trillion stars . Of course, the amount of space between the stars is infinitely greater, scientists believe that space is not necessarily "empty" as we think, but contains its own properties.

According to the Rig Veda, 1/4 of the universe is seen, the rest is unseen.  This sounds similar to scientist's speculation that most of the universe consists of dark matter and dark energy.

Amidst all this, if we believe in God, we must wonder.  Religions come and go, saints come and go, and they say some little things about God, but if God is eternal, omniscient and omnipresent, who can appreciate His vastness and grandeur?  In such a situation, humility is the best policy when talking about God.

We want to end here, but something more must be said.  No matter how big we imagine the universe to be, God is bigger, infinitely bigger. Furthermore, He is something entirely different, for He is both bigger and smaller than we imagine.  The sages tell us the human physiology is unique in that it can experience pure consciousness, which Christ called "the Kingdom of Heaven within."

Cosmic Story -  Sathya Sai Baba and the Tiger Skin

When Sathya Sai Baba was young boy an English officer was hunting on the far side of the Chitravati River, which runs alongside Puttaparthy, Baba's hometown.  He killed a tiger near Puttaparthy. (This was when the British still ruled India).  He was returning to Anantapur when his jeep stopped opposite to Puttaparthy village. It would not start again. The driver, who had heard about the Miracle Boy (Baba) went in search of Him to see if He could help them get their car started. The driver asked the boy "Are you Sai Baba"? Then Sai Baba told him that he would come to the jeep.  Baba peeped into the jeep and saw the carcass of the dead tiger which the officer had shot just two hours ago.

Sai Baba said that he had stopped the jeep at this place.  He told them that the dead tiger was a mother of three cubs just two weeks old. He said the cubs are at this time wailing for their mother. He told them to go back, recover the cubs and gift them to a zoo, where they would be cared for.  He told the Englishman not to shoot wild beasts with guns. He told him he should shoot them with his camera.

The Englishman obeyed Baba.  He returned, found the tiger cubs, and took them to a zoo. Swami's counsel touched him very much and he stopped killing animals. A month later he came to Baba with the tiger skin. He told Baba that "I cannot live with it any more, sir.  I would like to present it to you".

In the Vedic belief, one "sows what one reaps" (law of karma, action and reaction).  If one is a hunter in this life, then in the next life, one becomes the animal.  The animal takes human birth and hunts those who killed it in the last life! To avoid this tragedy, it is best to STOP unnecessarily killing animals for food or play, and become vegetarian.
