PAINTED LIONS ON CAMPUS

Two painted lions have been installed on campus, including this one in front of The Burrow Center for Fine and Performing Arts. The second is located in between the James C. Bailey Center and the Student Center. Thanks to the amazing artists who worked so hard on these pieces. Look for more in the future!

ENTER HAIKU CONTEST DURING JAPANESE ART EXHIBITION

Would you like to win
A little spending money?
Enter this contest.

The Wallace State English Department in conjunction with Sigma Kappa Delta and The Lion's Den Writing Club, in celebration of the Burrow Museum's exhibition of historic Japanese wood block prints on loan from the Georgia Museum of Art, will sponsor a Haiku Poetry Contest from October 15 to December 3, 2015.

Haiku is a descriptive form of poetry originating in Japan. While the subject of Haiku can be about any matter, it typically discusses subjects from the natural world, such as seasons, months, animals, insects or any other element of nature.

There are no specific rules for writing a haiku; however the structure of a haiku is always the same, including the following features:
  • Only three lines, totaling 17 syllable
  • The first line is only 5 syllables
  • The second line is 7 syllables
  • The third line is 5 syllables
  • Punctuation and capitalization rules are up to the poet and need not follow rigid rules used in structuring sentences
  • Haiku does not have to rhyme; in fact, many times it does not rhyme at all.
Entries for the contest should be received no later than Dec. 3, 2015. Entries received after that deadline will not be accepted. The contest is open to all Wallace State students and the public. Each contestant is limited to three unpublished haiku, not submitted for publication to any other contest.

Submit each entry on three separate 3-by-5 inch cards, two with the the haiku only (anonymous judging), and the third with the haiku and the author's name, address, phone number and/or email address in the upper left-hand corner. Please designate as "haiku." Haiku not meeting all of these requirements will not be accepted. Please type or write legibly. Failure to follow this format may result in disqualification.

Submit entries to Jen Hays, English Department, P.O. Box 2000, Hanceville, AL, 35077.

Awards include $150 for first prize, $100 for second prize, and $50 for third prize. The winning haiku will be published on the Wallace State website and in other appropriate WSCC publications.

WSCC'S HONOR CODE - MAKE THE PLEDGE

Wallace State's Honor Code sets Wallace State apart from other community colleges and places the college in elite company with many other of the nation's most revered institutions of higher education by asking students and employees to voluntarily commit to upholding standards of trust, compassion, and mutual respect. By encouraging everyone to be mindful of others, it promotes a safe environment for learning and personal and professional growth.

Click HERE to view the Honor Code and add your name to the pledge.

Please note signing the Honor Code is a symbolic, voluntary act. It complements our formal obligations outlined in the Student and Personnel Handbooks.

The Honor Code was adopted by the WSCC Student Government Association and approved by the WSCC Honor Code Committee and President's Cabinet in Spring 2015.

THANKS, AGAIN!

Wallace State Community College made a great impression recently at the 2015 Cullman County Fair Parade. The float featured Roary, our WSCC mascot, Miss Wallace State Emily Davis, and the Wallace State Dixie Land Jazz Band. Wallace State Cheerleaders, nursing students, Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society students, and others walked along side the float, passing out Wallace State pencils to the crowds lining the street. (Our apologies for inadvertently omitting the Math Honor Society students in a previous post.)

Special thanks to all who gave of their time to participate in the parade and the committee in charge of planning and decorating the float. Great job!

Thanks also to all of the volunteers who worked the Wallace State booths at the Blount County and Cullman County fairs.

BEST CURB APPEAL

The Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce recently awarded Wallace State with the Community Improvement Award for Best Curb Appeal.

The Wallace State Plant Operations and Agribusiness Landscaping teams work hard in their efforts to make our campus beautiful and are very deserving of the recognition. Please congratulate them as you see them hard at work around campus!

FREE SCREENING & Q&A WITH FILMMAKER

The Evelyn Burrow Museum will offer a free screening of the documentary "1971", which tells the story of eight ordinary people who broke into a FBI office in Media, Penn., in 1971 and uncovered evidence of illegal actions by the FBI, including spying and intimidation of Americans exercising their First Amendment rights.

The movie will be shown on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m., in the Recital Hall of the Burrow Center for Fine and Performing Arts. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Filmmaker Johanna Hamilton will be on hand to discuss the film. Visit www.1971film.com for more information about the movie, the subjects in the film and the filmmakers.
