Youth lead discussion on data
More than 20 youth ages 16-24 came together on March 10 to review and discuss education data reported in the 2014 Road Map Project Results Report. Participating youth are members of SOAR's King County Youth Advisory Council and represent the Highline, Seattle, Renton, Tukwila, Shoreline and Kent school districts as well as several local community colleges and employment training programs, such as Year Up. Many of the youth have direct or close experiences with being disconnected from school.
Young people from the council explained the data to their peers and facilitated small-group discussions about three questions: Root causes and other factors that contribute; what teachers, administrators and policymakers can do; and what young people can do. In order to go deep in one area, youth chose one of three topics -- early literacy, discipline and college enrollment -- to focus on.
