NEWS: @ the Jazz House

Weather's getting chilly out there, but it's getting HOT at the Jazz House, as our semester classes have kicked into full swing!

Close to 140  students between the ages of 8-18  have jumped into the jazz "shed" this year to take part in one of three  big bands numerous  small combos,  the Vocal Jazz Academy and our  Emerging Musicians Community Concerts Program (EMC2) It's serious business, but it's not "all work and no play!" In between rehearsal sessions, our students hang out  with fellow musicians  and, sometimes, with SUPERSTARS! Just last week, our Artistic Director and bass extraordinaire Christian McBride brought along another world-class bassist for a visit to the Jazz House: Edgar Meyer, a critically acclaimed classical bassist, multi-instrumentalist and composer.   Now, that's a lot of bass in the House!

NEWS: In the Schools

We take pride of our work in the schools - after all, that's where our mission really started! 13 years later, we're happy to say that we're in more schools, teaching more children, putting in more hours, and spreading the gift of more music! This year, we've already launched three of our In-School Music Programs in Newark, and more are expected to begin over the next few weeks.

Last week, the Jazz House Music Club for grades 6-8th returned to Rafael Hernandez School, with Randall Haywood as lead teacher and Anthony Perez as teaching assistant. The Jazz House Music Club is an exciting program that fosters both music and life skills in middle-schoolers, while helping to develop a great high school feeder program. At Rafael Hernandez School, this program is made possible thanks to the support of the Rivendell Foundation. At LINK Community Charter School - where Jazz House Kids runs a general music program from grades 5-8 - we welcome our newest faculty member, Lisette Santiago, a multi-instrumentalist whose first passions were Latin rhythms and percussion. She's a proud graduate of LaGuardia High School of Music and the Arts and, later, Columbia University, where she also pursued vocal coaching as part of a Columbia - Juilliard joint program. Finally, we're so proud to continue our work at the John F. Kennedy School in Newark, a district wide middle-secondary special education school! Returning to JFK this year, we have our Jazz House Vocal Summit Choir, led by master instructor Phil Bingham, and the Jazz House Band, led by Pascal method instructors Anja Nielsen and Lee HogansThis program is funded in part by the Silver Family Foundation.

NEWS: In the Community

Jazz House Kids' guiding principles weave together music, mentoring, education and apprenticeship. Through these four pillars, we cultivate tomorrow's community leaders and global citizens so they may build vibrant communities wherever they live. Because we believe in the transformative power of music, we make sure to spread it around as much as possible. How? By giving the gift of music back to the community through our Emerging Musicians Community Concert Program, better known as EMC2! Also known as "giglets", they consist of student performances in public engagements, and we play more than 75 every year!

Between their classes and live performances, our students live and play like the real pros!

Recent EMC2 appearances included the 35th Anniversary for the Community Foundation of New JerseyJanet Taylor Pickett's opening exhibit at the Hillside Square Gallery, the Central Jazz Festival in Somerville, and the Montclair Art Museum's "Celebration of MAM's Future: A Landmark Event". Jazz House Kids was also honored to help pay homage to an American hero during the Memorial Service at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center!
NEWS: Coming Up!!!

The Jazz House EMC2 program is thrilled to be a part of Open Book Open Mind at the Montclair Public Library! This coming  Sunday,  October 18th at 4:00pm , poet Elizabeth Alexander, best known for her reading during President Obama's inauguration, will be reading from her new memoir, titled  The Light of The World . A Jazz House Kids quartet will accompany the reading and discussion about true love, loss, and art and music of the African diaspora. The event is FREE and OPEN to the public!

Jazz House Kids provides the framework inside which students from diverse backgrounds can play, sing and appreciate America's original musical art form, jazz. Through music, mentoring, education and apprenticeship we cultivate tomorrow's community leaders and global citizens so they may build vibrant communities where they live.  Just as our students need our support, we need YOUR support to continue fulfilling our mission. There's many ways you can help! Donating is only one of them.
