Genes to Society: Making Hopkins A Model Institution
A century ago, Abraham Flexner was commissioned by the Carnegie Foundation to examine American medical education. Flexner found that many medical schools in the United States lacked rigorous admission criteria and that medical students were not appropriately trained in biomedical science, scientific research or the fundamentals of clinical diagnosis and treatment. He recommended sweeping changes in medical education in the United States, and he used Johns Hopkins as a model for what medical schools should be like in this country. Read More

IEE 5-year Anniversary
The IEE is thrilled to celebrate its 5-year anniversary this fall. Under the leadership of Joseph Cofrancesco Jr., MD, MPH, FACP, recently named the inaugural Johns Hopkins Institute for Excellence in Education Professor of Medicine, the IEE continues to make a significant impact in medical and biomedical education - both locally and on a national scale. Any JHU SOM alum whose grad year ends in a 4, 5, 9 or a 0, as well as all who graduated before 1964, are invited to attend Reunion 2015! Save the date postcards were mailed in July and additional information will be sent in late fall 2014. If you did not receive a Save the Date (and your class year ends in a 4,5,9 or 0) please update your contact information. We hope you will be attending the 38th occurrence of the Biennial Meeting and Reunion Weekend.

The annual First Year Medical Student Stethoscope Event was held on Monday September 22, 2014 at the Armstrong Medical Education Building for the Class of 2018.
All 120 students attended the ceremony and reception. Speakers at this year's event included:
Paul Rothman, M.D., Dean and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, Roy Ziegelstein, M.D., Vice Dean for Education; Ralph Hruban, Med '85, President of the JHM&SA; Eileen (Patti) Vining, Med '72, Immediate Past President of JHM&SA; and Susan L. Gearhart, M.D., JHM&SA Councilor.
