A Message from our President,
Karie Purcell
KSA Management
September....wow, fall is here!! New school supplies, new classrooms, and in some cases, new schools. So much happens in our lives quickly and we often forget to take it all in. My kids are grown, my grandchild is already seven. I look over all my friends' Facebook pages and see new babies, or their children just starting high school, or just getting their driver's permit. Where does the time go?
I remember MY first day of high school and life was so hard then! "Am I wearing the right jeans? Do you think my teachers will be cool? Do I have to ride the bus?" Later, the hard questions turned into, "Where should my office be located? How many employees should I hire? Can I afford to pay for health care? How can I expand my business?"

A Message from our CEO,
Diana Duenas
Summer is over. At least for the thousands of kids that went back to school in August. There are only four more months of 2015... where did this year go? Well, we still have a lot more activities you can get involved with this year!
For instance, the
28th Annual A Taste of Encino. This wonderful, community event brings everything Encino has to offer in one place... The San Fernando Valley's Ultimate Block Party. How can you participate in "Taste" you ask? You can still be a sponsor of the event, you can take a booth and showcase your business and of course, we can always use a few hours of your time that day to help us with all that goes in to an event of this magnitude. Just call the Chamber office, we'll help you get involved!

Exciting times are ahead for the San Fernando Valley. Van Nuys Airport, a Los Angeles World Airport, has begun to perform customs inspection, which means international flights can land directly in Van Nuys instead of LAX. This development comes on the heels of the groundbreaking of a prop park last year. What does all this mean for businesses in the area, including Encino?
Diana Sanchez, Director of Public and Community Relations at Van Nuys Airport, will be the guest speaker of the September 15
th Business and Professional Development Lunch.
Ms. Sanchez will update members on the status of the new developments at Van Nuys Airport, in addition to insight on how the new operations could bring more economic activity to the area, and how our members can benefit from it.
Our Business and Professional Development Lunch will be held at the Monterey at Encino at 16821 Burbank Blvd. in Encino. The cost is $22 for members with reservations and $30 for non-members and walk-ups. Call the Chamber office to make your reservations at (818) 789-4711.
Please Note:
We will have a special format for the October 20th B & P lunch. Please be sure and make your reservation early

Cranberry for prevention of recurrent urinary tract infection:
By Stan Goldenberg,
West-Val Pharmacy
Urinary tract infection (UTIs) are traditionally treated with a course of antibiotics, and patients prone to recurrent UTIs may be managed with low-dose, long-term antibiotics for prophylaxis.
Approximately 50% of women will suffer from a UTI at least once in their lifetime. The highest incidence is among women aged 18-24. One in four women who develop a UTI will have a recurrence. Recurrence occurs most frequently in women 18-39 years of age and in older women. As of 1995, the total cost of UTI treatment was $1.6 billion annually.
As a component of cranberry juice-a conventional food that also is classified as a functional food, proanthocyanidins my decrease the risk of UTIs.
Cranberry products have no associated adverse effects, but adherence may be and issue. Considerations when recommending cranberry supplementation are counseling for daily use as prophylaxis versus treatment of UTIs.

A Guide to Using
the Valley Discount Card for Local Busi
nesses
What is the Valley Discount Card?
The Valley Discount Card (VDC) is a tool created by the Encino Chamber of Commerce to offer local businesses (retail, professional and others) in Encino and surrounding areas, a method to increase their customer traffic and (hopefully) their business revenue by provfiding specific discount offers to consumers. It is a bright green, credit card-sized paper card (see illustration above right)
- Businesses must be a member of the Encino Chamber of Commerce to become a provider for this program.
- Each business can select the type and size of discount they will offer. They are responsible for offering that discount when the customer presents the VDC.
|
- This program provides customers with not only a discount on specific products and/or services, but also appeals to their sense of being able to support local businesses.
- Individuals do not have to be a member of the Encino Chamber to use the Valley Discount Card and receive discounts.

Are You Taking Proper Safety Precautions for Your Children?
Child Passenger Safety Week (Sept. 13-19)
Serves as an Important Reminder for Parents
Sarah Hines,On behalf of the
California Office of Traffic Safety
For any parent or caregiver, nothing is more important than ensuring a child's safety. Whether driving young passengers around the block to school or across town for soccer practice, taking a few extra minutes to ensure that children are properly secured in the correct car restraint should always remain a top priority. National Child Passenger Safety Week, taking place September 13-19, aims to serve as an important reminder for this necessary precaution. During this week, many communities will have Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians on-hand to provide free education on how to properly install and use car seats, booster seats, and seat belts for children of all ages - your car, your seat, your child.
