Dear Devotees,

Namaste!  This Saturday is called "Amalaki Ekadasi", an auspicious day for worshippers of Lord Vishnu.  Please join in Sudarshana Homa in the Homa Kunda on this day, 10:00 am - 12:00 Noon.

This week, the Temple is in special need of raisins (or any small dried fruit) and almonds (or any nut) to be given in prasad packets to devotees at the Sai Temple.  Also needed are:
  • 100 water bottles - for Sandwich Seva, Sunday 8:30 am
  • Wheat bread for Sandwich Seva
  • Sesame oil - to light daily oil dipams for all Gods in the Sri Venkateswara Temple and Baba Temple
  • Prasad for Thursday - to offer to Sri Sai, at 6:30pm & 8pm
  • Rice -  10 or 20 lbs bags of Sonu Massori rice.  The Sri Venkateswara shilpis (religious artists) eat 10-20 lbs of rice a day!  Donated rice is also used to prepare prasad for devotees on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
  • Milk - used for abhishekam and also for prasad for the devotees.
This week we have lots of milk left from Mahashivaratri so it is not requested.

With loving regards,
Craig Sastry
FROM SAI BABA

I demand Dakshina from my devotees only to teach them that riches are short lived.  Keep away from money that is temporary. Remeber God, the Truth, the Infinite.  Deliverance can be attained.  What is more valuable than peace?
Quote of the Week

When the mind is still, then Truth gets her chance to be heard in the purity of silence.

Where is God?

Where is God?  Jesus said "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you".  Sathya Sai Baba said "The distance between you and God is the distance between you and yourself." Lord Krishna said that the "Atman", the Supreme Self, is within each person.  This Atman, He said, is the same as Brahman, the soul of the universe.

How to find this Self? Great saints like Ramana Maharishi said that self - inquiry is the way.  We say "Now I am repeating a mantra" or, "Now I am eating".  "Last night I was sleeping".  The focus is always outward, on what you, your mind, or your body is doing.  But one should inquire deeper and ask  "Who is this 'I'?  This 'I' is the silent witness of everything.  That is the Self.  Find this 'I' and find the Self.

Persons wanting to know the Self can make self-inquiries and see if, with introspection, the Self does not reveal itself.  Look inside and find out who the 'I' is! This is the path of knowledge.  With a little introspection, Self Realization dawns quickly.

Cosmic Story:  Which is More Powerful - God or His Name?
One day Lord Ram was sitting on his royal throne. Around him were great rishis like Viswamitra, Vasistha, Narada, and other sages.  They were discussing religious topics. Rishi Narada said "Tell me scholars.  What is your opinion, is God or is His name greater?"  Then a long discussion followed, some taking one opinion, and others the other. Rishi Narada finally expressed his opinion that the Name was even greater than God Himself.

Before all the assembled rishis and sages left the hall, Narada took Hanuman aside. He told Hanuman "You know, Rishi Viswamitra is really just a king.  He is not like Vasistha and the other sages.  You should not prostrate or show him any respect when he leaves." Hanuman's heart was as innocent and pure as the Manasarovar Lake. He readily agreed to whatever sage Narada told him.  When the other rishis and sages left the hall, Hanuman prostated to them, but when Viswamitra passed Hanuman, Hanuman turned away from him.

Rishi Viswamitra was upset about his treatment by Hanuman.  Narada, ever the mischief maker, inflamed Viswamaitra's anger further.  "Did you see how Hanuman treated you?" he asked.  "Did you see how he did obeisance to others but not you? Doesn't he know that, if it were not for you, Hanuman and Sita would not even have met?" Saying such words, he poured salt on the wounds of the rishi, inflaming his anger. He convinced Viswamitra that Hanuman should be punished.

Viswamitra went to Lord Ram.  "Hanumanji has insulted me.  I want him put to death by sunset tomorrow" said the sage.  Rama was taken aback.  But what could he do?Viswamitra was one of his gurus.  He had no choice but to obey.

Hanumanji learned of his impending death sentence.  He went to Rishi Narada. "Naradaji, please help me" he requested.  "Following your command, I slighted Rishi Viswamitra.  Now Lord Ram has sentenced me to death."  Narada smiled and said "Hanumanji!  Follow my instructions, and I promise no harm will come to you."

The next day, Hanumanji went to the Sarayu River to take his morning bath.  Then he started chanting the name of Lord Ram with love and devotion.  The whole kingdom knew of his death sentence, and whoever could assembled there to witness the spectacle of Lord Ram putting to death his greatest devotee.  After some time, Lord Ram came with Viswamitra and the other rishis and sages. Hanumanji was continuously chanting Lord Ram's name.  Hanuman looked at Lord Ram with the greatest tenderness and love.

Rama fitted a bow to his arrow, and shot it directly at Hanuman's heart.  A few inches before hitting its mark, the arrow fell harmless to the ground.  Rama fitted another, more powerful arrow, and shot again.  The same thing happened.  Rama kept using more and more powerful weapons, finally sending a Brahmastra, a divine atomic weapon against Hanumanji.  None of the weapons had any effect whatsoever. Hanuman kept repeating the Lord's name.

Then Naradaji approached Rishi Viswamitra. He asked Viswamitra to stop this unique battle.  "Sage Viswamitra!  Even if Hanumanji is ignorant of your greatness, does that diminish it any way?  This leela has been enacted to answer the question of who is greater, the Naam (name) of God, or God Himself.  See how even Ram's arrows are powerless against a true devotee chanting His name?"  Viswamitra understood and asked Ram to commute the death sentence.  Hanumanji approached the sage and asked pardon for his insult.  Not only did Viswamitra pardon Hanuman, he blessed Hanuman with ever growing devotion to Sri Ram.

The mind is a fickle instrument, always looking for entertainment.  The saints say that the senses can harness the mind, or the mind can harness the senses.  It is our decision.  If the mind can harness the senses, why not have the mind tell the mouth to chant the name of the Lord?  Then we will harness the infinite power controlling this universe!
