EFNJ Scholarship Program
scholarship

The Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey is now accepting applications for our annual scholarship program for New Jersey high school seniors who have epilepsy. We anticipate offering at least three $1,000 scholarships this year.

New Jersey high school seniors with epilepsy who plan to attend a college or university are eligible. Academic achievement, participation in activities and financial need will be considered. The extent of a student's disability(s) will be taken into account as well, so that s/he need not be near the top of her/his class to qualify. Final awards will be made by the Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey, which reserves the right not to make any awards.

Scholarship Applications and supporting documents are due by May 1, 2015. Should you have any questions, please contact Andrea Racioppi at (800)336-5843 or by email at [email protected].

Beneficial Effects of Surgery for Epilepsy are Sustained for More Than 15 Years
Medical News Today

Brain surgery for otherwise hard-to-treat epilepsy is effective for up to 15 years, according to a new survey by Henry Ford Hospital physicians.

"These encouraging findings will be valuable during the decision-making process and counseling on different aspects of care in patients with epilepsy," says Vibhangini S. Wasade, M.D., a neurologist at Henry Ford Hospital and lead author of the study.

The study is published in the February issue of Epilepsy & Behavior. A copy of the study is available online.

The findings were based on a telephone survey of patients who had a portion of their brains surgically removed, or resected, to treat localization-related epilepsy at Henry Ford during an 18-year period.

"Most previous studies looked at seizure and psychosocial outcomes at 2 to 5 years after surgery, and a few for up to 10 years," Dr. Wasade says. "We aimed to assess the long-term outcomes - up to 15 years - at our epilepsy center." Continue reading
