Hosanna's E-Update

Why Are YOU A Lutheran?

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one may boast. ~Ephesians 2.8-9

Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

Have you ever wondered WHY you are attending a LUTHERAN Church? Is it the theology, the God-talk? Is it the fellowship? Is it the good food, our famous potlucks and coffee? Do you like the worship, the music, the people?

We celebrate Reformation Sunday this week. Here is a brief history lesson on the Reformation and being Lutheran- it all began with a person named Martin Luther:
The Lutheran Church is the oldest Protestant Christian tradition, dating back to the Protestant Reformation and the person of Martin Luther. Lutherans are those Christians who choose to accept Martin Luther's teachings. On October 31, 1517, Luther, a Catholic monk, posted his 95 Theses as a challenge to the doctrine and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, hoping to reform the practices he felt were inconsistent with scripture. When the conflict escalated to a distinct separation with the Roman Catholic Church, those who accepted Luther's reforms became "Lutherans." Based on Luther's own writings, Lutherans still uphold Luther's theological teachings such as sola scriptura (scripture as the primary authority for faith and life), sola gratia (justification by the grace of God alone), and sola fida (salvation through faith in Christ alone). Lutheranism spread from Germany to most countries across the globe and has become one of the largest Protestant denominations.

Here is what Martin Luther had to say about being Lutheran:
"I ask that people make no reference to my name; let them call themselves Christians, not Lutherans. What is Luther? After all, the teaching is not mine. Neither was I crucified for anyone. St. Paul, in I Corinthians 3, would not allow the Christians to call themselves Pauline or Petrine but Christian. How then should I - poor stinking maggot-fodder than I am - come to have people call the children of Christ by my wretched name? Not so, my dear friends; let us abolish all party names and call ourselves Christian." ~From Martin Luther, "A Sincere Admonition to All Christians to Guard Against Insurrection and Rebellion" (1522), Luther's Works, Vol. 45, p. 70.

This Sunday during the 10:30 am worship, 14 of our youth will make a public profession of their faith and take a step on their journey of faith, their journey of being a Christian- a Christ-follower. They have spent two years in intentional study and fellowship learning what it means to be a follower of Jesus- and what it means to be a Lutheran. They have each prepared a faith-project that will be displayed in the gathering area. Come and see how the Lutheran Church continues to reform through the heart and hands and eyes of our youth.

See you in Church!      ~ Pastor Linda
