Jutta von Gontard
First, welcome home to all you summer travelers! We look forward to hearing about your adventures over the next few months as we all get back to enjoying all the wonderful opportunities Santa Fe has to offer. .

As you will see in this issue of the newsletter, we're starting our fall season with a special treat: a visit to the Gaugy Gallery with a talk by gallery owner Michelle Gaugy.(Thanks, Judy Donohue, for arranging this extraordinary opportunity!)  To stay with the arts theme, Linda McEnroe, Co-Coordinator of the Social Committee is leading the annual Truchas Art Tour.  And our two coffee club gatherings will give us the opportunity to visit with old and new friends and talk about our summer travels and - just reconnect!

Monthly Meeting

The September meeting will be Monday, September 28th from 5:45-7:30pm

Gaugy Gallery, 418 Canyon Road

August program:
Art Viewer 101 with Michelle Gaugy

Our September meeting will be a rare treat and departure from our regular meetings. Michelle Gaugy is hosting TTN at the Gaugy Gallery,418 Canyon Road in her historic building featuring noted artists' works. A dynamic discussion of (see Michelle's description.)

What is the role (and the responsibilities?) of the art viewer? Are we just passive receivers? When we go to a gallery or a museum, are we joyous? Or do we find ourselves mystified
- even horrified? And if the latter, what do we do? Stay silent? Ask questions? Or run out the door? Let's talk together about the why, the what, and the wherefores of being an art viewer.
We will be looking forward to lots of participation in this talk!

This informational meeting is required in order to participate in a Transition Peer Group. At this two-hour meeting, TTN members will be introduced to the Transition Peer Group guidelines and will form new Transition Peer Groups that evening. Please bring your calendars in order to schedule your group's initial meeting.

Who can participate?
Any current TTN members - this is a TTN Member Benefit. Non-members may attend but must become members to participate in a TTN Transition Peer Group.

What do I need to do?
Please RSVP by Friday, September 18 to jean(at)jeanpalmer.com.  We need to have at least 12 women to conduct the information session .

Still Another Opportunity for Community Involvement-CIS

Many of us know that New Mexico's public schools are in the country's basement when it comes to quality education. Monday evening, August 24, we learned what the
New Mexico chapter of Communities in Schools (CIS) is doing to help change that. Julia Bergen, the Executive Director, provided a deep and rich presentation about how CIS operates and the kinds of challenges they encounter:

-  many students are homeless - or sharing a one bedroom/one bath apartment with 14 people;
-  most are fortunate to have breakfast and lunch provided by their schools... because they may have nothing to eat during the weekend.
-  some find themselves with only one parent... who uses and sells drugs.
Children are resilient but it's hard to imagine anyone able to learn, let alone be productive, with any of these traumatic conditions in their lives.

We can volunteer to help. Chapter member
Judy Donohue will answer questions and/or you may contact CIS volunteer coordinator
Cynthia Torcasso(at)[email protected]. Their web-site is www.cisnm.org.

Clean Slate Writers is seeking one or two new members. We meet twice monthly on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays and give each other feedback on our writing using a three-step method. You're welcome to attend and check it out. Please call or e-mail Sue susaneburgess(at)earthlink.net or 505-670-3068 for more info.
