UTAH ASPHALT PAVEMENT ASSOCIATON NEWSLETTER
Executive Director's Message:
It's not hard at this time of year to look back and think of all the things you are thankful for in the year that was.  For me personally, I am grateful everyday that my children are happy and healthy and that I get to live in a beautiful state with my lovely wife and kind friends.  Certainly, my role with the Utah Asphalt Pavement Association (UAPA) plays a big part in all that I am grateful for as well.  Indeed, I'm grateful for a job that allows me to interact on a regular basis with people that are trying to make our neighborhoods, communities, and state better.   As we celebrate this week all that we are thankful for, my hope for you is that you will take just a moment to pause and to reflect on the good that you do and the contribution we individually and collectively contribute to simply make life in Utah better.   As you do, I want you to know that I am truly grateful for the work you put in to make things better for me, my family, my friends, this association, and all the good people of Utah.  Thank you.

Uintah Basin Asphalt Summit
Please join us on December 16, 2015, at the Uintah Basin Asphalt Summit presented by the Utah Asphalt Pavement Association (UAPA).  CE credits will be provided for three educational sessions covering strategies for building a more durable asphalt mix, understanding asphalt binders from crude oil to the road, and the pavement preservation matrix.
We will also be pleased to have two general sessions with speakers from the Uintah Basin area.  Attendee registrations include a continental breakfast and lunch at the Asphalt Summit.  Special thanks to Burdick Materials for being our Presenting Sponsor at this event!

Important Upcoming Events for UAPA
UAPA will soon hold elections for leadership positions within the Association.  If you have an interest on taking on a leadership role within UAPA, please contact Reed Ryan directly to express your interest and discuss potential openings.

On December 2, 2015, UAPA will hold a strategic planning session for the Association.  This session will be guided by the Board of Directors, but all UAPA members are welcome to send suggestions and comments regarding the future of the association to Reed Ryan prior to the 2nd of December. All comments and suggestions will be considered.

Designed to give a basic understanding of all things asphalt, this track is for those who may be new to the industry or those who may need to just brush up on their knowledge base in this fast-moving and and ever-changing industry.

Construction and Engineering Track
Created to focus on topics, opportunities, and issues central to the asphalt pavement industry, this track offers attendees the chance to learn about topics critical to successful projects and planning.

Maintenance Track
Our most popular track at the Asphalt Conference each year, the Maintenance Track offers a first-rate education on all things related to the maintenance and preservation of our critical infrastructure here in the state.

Industry, Innovation, and Design Track
What are the challenges facing industry?  What are some of the solutions that may be out there?  As an industry, what have we done and what we will we do moving forward to seize upon the challenges and opportunities being presented to us?

Aggregates and Crushing Track
New to the Utah Asphalt Conference, the Aggregates and Crushing Track offers attendees a chance to learn about topics critical to the performance and production of durable asphalt pavements.  With a focus pointed towards the mountain, attendees will learn about the aggregates, production techniques, stockpiling, and applications critical to building the best road possible.

UAPA Celebrates 2nd Annual Southern Utah Asphalt Seminar
Special thanks to all of those who made the 2015 Southern Utah Asphalt Seminar a resounding success.  This year we had 120 people in attendance at the seminar chalked full of four excellent breakout sessions covering cold weather paving strategies; the role of polymers; the pavement maintenance matrix; and the importance of tack coats.  We were also pleased to host the Mayor of St. George, the Honorable Jon Pike, and Mr. Robert Stewart, Quality and Materials Engineer with the Utah Department of Transportation as our keynote speakers.  We're especially grateful to all of our Black and Gold Sponsors for helping to make they event a success; they are: Landmark Testing & Engineering; Holbrook Asphalt; Western Rock; Nu Rock Asphalt Coatings; and Komatsu Equipment Company.  We also had two Black and Silver Sponsors (Kimball Equipment Company and Wheeler Machinery) and twelve vendors with table top exhibits.  Hopefully we can dial up some better weather for the golf outing in 2016!

Doctoral Student from Utah Receives International Scholarship from the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists
Michael Vrtis, a doctoral candidate in Auburn University's Department of Civil Engineering, has received a scholarship from the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (AAPT). This annual international scholarship is designed to increase the number of scientists and engineers preparing for careers in the field of asphalt pavement technology.
Vrtis earned both a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Utah. Under the direction of civil engineering professor David Timm, he is conducting research on pavement responses to vehicular loading and environmental changes using instrumented test sections on the NCAT Pavement Test Track.
