Mrs. Baniak

Hi! My name is Mrs. Carole Baniak. I am an Intervention Specialist here at Horizon Science Academy. I graduated from Western Connecticut State University with a B.S. in Music
Education. I am certified to teach Music in grades Pre-K to 12. I received a Masters' degree in
Special Education from Western Connecticut State University as well. I also currently am a
certified Intervention Specialist for grades K-12. I recently moved to Ohio from Connecticut
where I have lived for most of my life. I reside in Ohio with my husband and two dogs. I have a
daughter who is an Elementary school teacher in CT and a son who is currently in Graduate
school obtaining a PhD in Forensic Psychology. I love being here at Horizon Science Academy
and love working with your children. Together, we will work to make your children the best
they can be!

3rd Grade Trip to
Ford Nature Center
On Tuesday, October 20th, the 3rd grade class took a field trip to the Ford Nature Center at Mill Creek Park. Students learned the differences between mammals, insects, and reptiles.
A Ford Nature Center guide showed the students a video on the different bugs you can find in your own backyard.
Ms. Grist and Miss Minnie's classes had a great time exploring nature and learning more about Mill Creek Park!

1st Grade Trip to
MetroParks Farm
 On Wednesday, October 21st, the 1st graders took a field trip to the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm. Students learned about different farm animals, farm equipment, and harvesting crops. Our farm guides took the students on a tractor ride throughout the farm. The pumpkin patch was one of the stops on the tractor ride, and students picked out their favorite pumpkin to take home with them. Miss Cicchinelli and Mrs. Heinonen's classes had a great time at the farm!

| Hispanic Heritage Celebration
On Thursday, October 15th, HSAY held a National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15th - October 15th, and celebrates Hispanic heritage and culture. Traditional Hispanic food was served, including pastelillos (savory turnovers) and arroz con frijoles (rice with beans). Our HSAY teachers helped decorate and serve food to the students and their guests.
Students from Miss Santos' class showed off the beautiful Hispanic flags that they had been working on, while also sharing information with the audience about each Hispanic country. A traditional Hispanic dance team came in to perform for the audience. We want to thank Miss Santos and everyone who helped make this a great night for students, families, and the community!

October's Students of the Month were rewarded for their efforts in responsibility. These students displayed responsible behaviors towards their teachers and others over the course of October. Congratulations to our October Students of the Month!

Fall Harvest Festival 2015

| On Friday, October 30th, HSAY celebrated our annual Fall Fest. Students in kindergarten through third grade were able to dress up in their Halloween costumes and parade around the school for everyone to see. Even the HSAY teachers dressed up for our fall festival. Parents and family members lined the gym to see their students' costume parade. The fourth through eighth graders passed out candy to the younger students. The day was filled with family, friends, and treats! |

CYSP Trip to the
Canfield Scaregrounds

On Friday, October 30th, our CYSP students took a field trip to the Canfield Scaregrounds for some Halloween fun. These students worked hard to earn this field trip, and everyone had a great time! A special thank you to Mr. Bohyer for organizing the trip, and to all of the HSAY teachers who volunteered to chaperon.

Horizon Students Visit Great Lakes

On Friday, October 23rd, HSAY's 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes made the trip to Cleveland's Great Lakes Science Center. Students explored three levels of interactive models, manipulatives, and centers. The theme at the Science Center was based around the fun and creative uses of mathematics. Students were able to construct mathematical arch ways, work with convex/concave lens, and even got to build fiber optic creations.
Also at the Science Center, students got to experience the space station exhibit. They were able to see and be inside a scale model of a return capsule, stand up close to an astronaut's space suit, and read how important mathematics and science are in exploration and discovery. The Great Lakes Science Center provides multiple opportunities for students to manipulate and discover the effects of mathematics, physics, biology, and enthusiasm.

On Friday, October 16th, our 4th grade students completed and showed off their biome projects that they have been working hard on. Mrs. Priester's 4th grade science students have been learning about the Earth's seven biomes, which are large communities of plants and animals (such as desert, tropical rainforest, arctic tundra, etc.).
As a final project, each student picked a biome to depict in a box. They were to include plants and animals that live in that biome. Mrs. Priester encouraged the students to get creative with their materials. The projects turned out great!
