Executive Director's Message

Please join us in welcoming Cristina Gastador, who joined our staff in May as CLCC's first Communications Coordinator!

Hi everyone! My name is Cristina Gastador and I am CLCC's new Communications Coordinator. I am so excited with what we have already achieved in the past few months.  Here are a couple of updates, as well as our needs for your input.

A face-lift for our CLCC website is in the works!

We have been working hard to refresh the CLCC website in order to make it more concise, relevant and user-friendly. The changes are just about finished and will be ready to launch later this month. We welcome your suggestions on how we may improve our website content to make it more useful to your conservation work.

Send us your favorite conservation photos for the CLCC website.

If you have any favorite photos from your land trust and community conservation work that you would like to share, please send them along as well. We would really like to showcase YOUR conservation work as much as possible on our website.

"Like" CLCC on Facebook!

We have also set up our new CLCC Facebook page and I invite you to check it out and "like us" on Facebook. And please share your Connecticut conservation news and photos on our Facebook page.

Thank you!

Your participation is critical to the success of our communications program. I am thrilled to be a part of CLCC and Connecticut's strong conservation community and am looking forward to all that we will accomplish together.

With best regards,

Cristina

Public Input Sought on State Plans

Revisions to Connecticut's Wildlife Action Plan
From CT DEEP

In 2005, Connecticut completed its Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy (CWCS), now known as the Connecticut Wildlife Action Plan (WAP), creating a blueprint for the conservation of wildlife over a decade.

Connecticut, along with other states across the country, is currently working on revisions to the WAP that will establish both a state and national framework for proactively conserving our fish and wildlife, including their habitats, for the next 10 years.

Help DEEP create a vision for the future of wildlife conservation

Participation by conservation partners, academic institutions, municipalities, and the public is key to making the revised WAP an effective tool for conserving Connecticut's diverse wildlife resources for future generations.

Comments may be submitted to the DEEP Wildlife Division via email ([email protected]) or through the "Get Involved" section of the Wildlife Action Plan webpage.

Further information available

Please click HERE to view or download the entire plan, to learn more about providing input on species of greatest conservation need, their habitats, or conservation actions and to review updated sections of the WAP as they become available.

Share your wildlife observations via Twitter

Additional information about Wildlife Action Plan revisions will be posted on the DEEP Fish and Wildlife Facebook Page and informational meetings will be held around the state this fall. You can also share your wildlife observations and follow the revision process on Twitter @CT_SWAP

The Integrated Water Quality Report
From the Rivers Alliance of Connecticut
DEEP has released its Integrated Water Quality Report on the status of CT rivers and other waters, delivered to Congress every two years pursuant to the Clean Water Act.  The Comment period on the Report runs to August 29, 2014.  For details, including copies of the full report and a summary, as well as instructions on submitting comments, please visit the DEEP webpage.

State Water Plan Comment Period Open
From the Rivers Alliance of Connecticut
The Water Planning Council (WPC) has been charged pursuant to state statute (C.G.S. section 25-33o) to prepare, within available appropriations, a state water plan for the management of the water resources of the state, in accordance with Public Act 14-163, by July 1, 2017.  The University of Connecticut has offered to provide services at no cost to the WPC, under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), to assist in the creation of the state water plan.  WPC is soliciting public comment on the MOU, and on other details on the proposed approach to developing the plan.  Deadline for public input is September 5, 2014.  For details, including instructions on submitting comments, please visit the Rivers Alliance website.

Take Action this Month to Support Enhanced Conservation Easement Incentive

From Independent Sector and the Land Trust Alliance

There are a a number of ways you can engage with our Connecticut Senators during the last couple of weeks of this month's Congressional recess to urge them to take immediate action on H.R. 4719 when they reconvene for two weeks in September.   H.R. 4719 makes permanent five important charitable giving incentives, including the enhanced deduction for conservation easement incentive, that support the critical work of nonprofit organizations across the country.  Without Senate action prior to the end of the year and the 113th Congress, the tax extender provisions will remain expired and the House-passed bill to make them permanent will become defunct.
Tips and talking points on writing letters and op-eds, requesting site visits or brief in-district meetings, using social media, and more may be found HEREPlease contact CLCC Executive Director Amy B. Paterson at [email protected] if you would like assistance with your outreach efforts.
Grant Opportunities

DEEP Grants to Municipalities for Aquatic Invasive Species Control on Inland Waters
DEEP currently has up to $150,000 for grants to CT municipalities in FY2015 to fund eligible diagnostic and control projects.  Grants will range from $2,500 to $50,000.  Requests for larger grants may be considered, but only for exceptional and well-justified proposals.  The state grant program is designed to cover 50% of project costs.  Applicants must demonstrate the ability to provide funds to cover the remaining 50% of project costs.

Conservation organizations and local interest groups can develop project proposals in collaboration with municipalities, but the municipality in which the project water body is located must apply for the funding.  Complete information, including the RFP and other application materials may be found and downloaded at the DEEP webpage or you can contact Nancy Murray at 860-424-3868 or [email protected].

The FY2015 Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry (S&PF) Landscape Scale Restoration Request for Proposals
The Fiscal Year 2015 Landscape Scale Restoration Competitive Request for Proposals is a significant way that the Northeastern Area is helping State Forestry agencies achieve priorities as documented in their respective state forest action plans while at the same time meeting regional and national priorities of the US Forest Service. Organizations interested in working on priority issues should familiarize themselves with their state forest action plan(s), and consult with their State Forester(s) or appropriate staff on proposal development. Not all proposals will be forwarded to the Forest Service for consideration, so early coordination with state foresters will be essential. The deadline for applications to be submitted to state foresters is September 15, 2014. For details, please click HERE or contact Helene Hochholzer at [email protected].

Land Trust to Land Trust
Advice Sought on working with local Conservation Commission on Controlling Invasive Plants in Inland Wetlands

In your town, if the conservation commission, land trust or some other organization or private party wishes to control invasive plants in an inland wetland and/or in the upland review area:
  • Is a permit from the Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Commission (IWC) required?
  • What are the requirements for receiving approval from the IWC?
  • Can approval be done administratively by the town's Wetlands Agent?
  • Are there Best Management Practices that do not need approval of the IWC?

Please forward answers to CLCC Steering Committee member Tom ODell (CACIWC) at [email protected]

Note:  If you have a question that you would like us to address to the land trust community on your behalf, or would like to share an experience or upcoming event with others working in land conservation, please send your question or information to CLCC Executive Director Amy B. Paterson at [email protected]
