New Lung Cancer
Screening Program
Breathe Easier & Get Screened

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC is launching a new specialized lung cancer screening program dedicated to the early diagnosis of lung cancer. Our Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Care Team, comprised of experts from many disciplines, is aiming to reduce the number of cancer deaths by providing low-dose CT lung cancer screenings for high-risk individuals. The Cancer Center is the first site in the region to offer lung cancer screenings at a location recognized by the Lung Cancer Alliance as a Screening Center of Excellence, meaning patients can rest assured they are receiving a precise diagnosis and quick access to treatment, if needed.

Are you at risk for lung cancer? Find out today. Breathe easier, and get screened.

Director's Message
Melanie Guilbeaux

Approximately 219,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. Because lung cancer is prevalent in the Houma area and the most common cause of cancer death, healthcare professionals and providers with a special interest in lung cancer have come together to form a Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary (MDC) Team. The Cancer Center's Lung MDC Team includes surgeons, pulmonologists, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, nurses and various staff members who are dedicated to the early detection and treatment of lung cancer. Our Lung MDC Team is aiming to reduce the number of lung cancer deaths by providing a comprehensive approach to each patient's treatment in conjunction with a low-dose CT lung cancer screening for high-risk individuals.

Celebrating Cancer Survivors

June is National Cancer Survivor Month

A cancer survivor is anyone with a history of cancer - from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. For many cancer survivors and family members, cancer is a life-changing event. Throughout the month of June, the Cancer Center will honor cancer survivors and their loved ones. It is a celebration for those who have survived, an inspiration for those recently diagnosed, a gathering of support for families and an outreach to the community.

On Friday, June 5, we kicked off survivorship month with an ice cream social. About 50 cancer survivors and their caregivers, along with healthcare providers and volunteers, celebrated with tasty ice cream sundaes and a fun photo booth. A special thanks to all who participated and volunteered.
