Spring/Summer Jewelry Trends

If you are looking for gift ideas for Mother's Day, or perhaps simply interested in upcoming jewelry trends, here is a look at what we have seen for Spring and Summer that are sure to be big hits.

The choker, which was a 90's fashion must, is making a comeback. Dainty layered chains and bulky multi-colored gemstone looks, as well as simple pearl strands, will be very in vogue. Medallion style pendants on leather and colored satin cords will be statement makers. Bohemian and casual "hippie" pieces will once again get the nod for the fashionable crowd. Florals, earth tones and gemstone naturals will be seen on ears, necks, wrists and fingers.

As always, if you are in need of ideas, we are always here to help!

Reminder

Many times we need special gifts for the extraordinary people in our lives, for milestone events, birthdays, weddings, etc.

At Karen's Jewelers, we strive to bring you just what you're looking for -- that meaningful keepsake gift that conveys how important your loved ones are to you.

May Birthstone: Emerald

Emeralds can range in color from bluish-green to a deep green. They are generally very included gemstones and high quality emeralds are very rare, causing them to be very valuable.

Legend states that emeralds could improve your memory and increase intelligence. Emeralds were also believed to be an antidote for poisons and poisonous wounds. Unfortunately this did not work as an antidote for Cleopatra. She owned an emerald mine and is believed to have died from a snake bite.

Emeralds rate 7.5-8-0 on the Mohs scale. It is best to avoid contact with other gemstones. Emeralds can be cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft-bristled brush. Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaners.

May Gems of Wisdom

The birthstone for May is the emerald. (Please see the birthstone article.)

The birth flower for May is the Lily of the Valley. The Lily of the Valley symbolizes sweetness and humility and the flower's white color and fragrance is said to represent pureness. The Lily of the Valley is one of the most popular flowers used in modern bridal bouquets.

Legendary Gemstones: Brooke Astor's Emerald and Diamond Necklace

Set in platinum and 18K gold, the emerald and diamond necklace designed by Bulgari, was a beloved and sentimental piece to Brooke Astor, socialite wife of Vincent Astor, whose father died in the RMS Titanic sinking. Mr. Astor commissioned the necklace along with a pair of earrings from Bulgari in the Fall of 1958, but sadly passed away in February of 1959 before he would see the completed project.

It was not until two years later that Brooke received a package from Bulgari which included a picture of the jewelry and a personal note from Mr. Astor, asking Bulgari to have the jewelry completed in time for Mrs. Astor's birthday in March of 1959. At the time, Brooke did not feel that she should move forward with the purchase, as she felt it was too lavish, but reassuring words from her banker changed her mind. She wrote in her autobiography, "Considering that it was really Vincent's last personal gift to me, I am very sentimental about it, and I felt that it was a sign of encouragement from Vincent."

The necklace sold at Sotheby's auction in September of 2012 for $686,500.
