Legendary Gemstones: Brooke Astor's Emerald and Diamond Necklace Set in platinum and 18K gold, the emerald and diamond necklace designed by Bulgari, was a beloved and sentimental piece to Brooke Astor, socialite wife of Vincent Astor, whose father died in the RMS Titanic sinking. Mr. Astor commissioned the necklace along with a pair of earrings from Bulgari in the Fall of 1958, but sadly passed away in February of 1959 before he would see the completed project. It was not until two years later that Brooke received a package from Bulgari which included a picture of the jewelry and a personal note from Mr. Astor, asking Bulgari to have the jewelry completed in time for Mrs. Astor's birthday in March of 1959. At the time, Brooke did not feel that she should move forward with the purchase, as she felt it was too lavish, but reassuring words from her banker changed her mind. She wrote in her autobiography, "Considering that it was really Vincent's last personal gift to me, I am very sentimental about it, and I felt that it was a sign of encouragement from Vincent." The necklace sold at Sotheby's auction in September of 2012 for $686,500. |
