Meet Kidney Walk Ambassador
Sharon

Renfrew Kidney Walk Ambassador Sharon

Although 1 in 10 Canadians has kidney disease, few have dealt with it to the extent that Sharon Roesler and her family have. Sharon comes from a large family whose history with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) spans generations. PKD is an inherited kidney disease, one that affected both her mother and grandmother, as well as many other members of her family. Of 14 siblings, three have had transplants and three are on dialysis.

Sharon is participating in the 2015 Renfrew Kidney Walk as the Renfrew Kidney Walk Ambassador. Along with her daughter Jadyn, who also has PKD, they hope to surpass their goal and beat last year's total of more than $1,100. Sharon initially got involved in the walk, not for herself, but because she wanted to help the patients she worked with as a nurse. As Kidney Walk Ambassador she wants to raise awareness about kidney disease and help raise funds for the important work The Kidney Foundation does in the Ottawa valley community and across Ontario.

Guelph Researcher Dr. Nina Jones Dr. Nina Jones had always been interested in science, but it was through undergraduate courses at the University of Guelph, Ontario that her passion for genetics and human disease was ignited. This led her to the University of Toronto, Ontario where she studied gene function in blood vessel development and kidney biology. Her desire to pursue a career in research in an environment where she could inspire future scientists brought her back to her alma mater. Today, Dr. Jones is a molecular biologist and Canada Research Chair overseeing her own research program at the University of Guelph, Ontario. A major goal of the program is to find a way to reverse kidney cell damage and fight kidney disease.

The Fall 2015 issue of Kidney Living is now available for your reading pleasure.

The feature articles in this issue of Kidney Living illustrate that a freshstart can be found in making simple changes to the way we eat, exerciseand view life. Gloria Schwartz shares how changes to her exerciseroutine positively impacted her kidney health, while dialysis patients Zita Garon, Greg Verduin and Steven Bailey share how they all are living fulland active lives while on dialysis. Kidney disease didn't mark the end oftheir story, it's just one part of their story; and with a fresh outlook, theyall live well with kidney disease.
One Strong Voice
Tell your federal candidate during the October 2015 federal election there is no reason for 50% of Canadians with kidney failure to die needlessly from kidney failure before they get a kidney transplant.

Later this month, watch for your invitation to use an online tool to ask all federal candidates in your community to commit Canada to increasing kidney transplant & organ donation by 50% before 2020.

three-peppers.jpg As fall comes around, common thoughts that many individuals share include: back to school, getting back into routine after a wonderful,
relaxing yet action-packed summer. It is also a wonderful time to shop at the farmer's market as many fruits and vegetables are ready to be harvested and enjoyed.
