Reading Connections NEWSFLASH

A lot of schools take a break in the summertime, but at Reading Connections we go strong all year round. We hope you enjoy this newsletter as a way to read about all our summer activities and the latest community happenings!
Student and Volunteer Celebration!

The Reading Connections Celebration was an amazing evening full of fun, great food, and congratulations. This year's annual event was held on August 12, and over 180 gathered at West Market Street United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall to celebrate the many accomplishments of volunteers and students. We recognized many groups of people including those who overcame obstacles and improved their literacy, not to mention  all our 100 Hours Club members! We want to congratulate this year's special awardees and also all those that are a part of the Reading Connections family.

Student Spotlight: Ekram Adam

Many of you may already be familiar with the story of Ekram Adam, a successful Family Literacy student and advocate of Reading Connections. Whether you've previously heard Ekram share her life story or if it's brand new to you, she's a tremendous inspiration for hard work.

Ekram was a math and physics professor at the University of Sudan, who migrated to the United States in 2007 with her husband. Upon arriving, Ekram did not speak any English and as a result could not find a job. Ekram enrolled in classes at GTCC, completing over 300 credit hours, while also obtaining her CNA certification. This past January Ekram began taking classes in the Family Literacy program. In four months we saw Ekram advance from the Low Intermediate education level to the Low Adult Secondary education level. While in the program Ekram also applied for fall admission in the Applied Mathematics Master program at North Carolina A&T State University and we are proud to announce that she was accepted! Congratulations Ekram, we are so proud of your success!

Tutor Spotlight: Charlene Miller
Congratulations and a huge thank you to Charlene Miller, an ESOL Tutor in High Point. Charlene is a graduate of High Point University and has been with Reading Connections since January of 2014. In May, she completed 5 online courses and 5 face-to-face courses offered by the North Carolina Community College System's Professional Development Program to earn her ESOL Specialty Certificate. Charlene was a great Tutor before, but now she has more methodology and better understanding of how to serve ESOL students. Charlene recently took a position with the Center for New North Carolinians to serve as an AmeriCorps member part time in addition to her new job in her field of study. We would like to thank her for her service to our program and wish her all the best in her next endeavor to continue serving English Learners!

You, too, can earn a professional development certificate! Just by being a Reading Connections Tutor, you can enroll in professional development one day trainings hosted throughout the state by the North Carolina Community College System! Check out their calendar here . Contact your coordinator for more information!
There Are Perks To Being 55 Or Older!

Did you know that if you're 55 or older, you could qualify for mileage reimbursement and supplemental auto insurance while you're tutoring with Reading Connections? Through the Senior Resources of Guilford, the RSVP (a SeniorCorps Program) program offers these perks and more! Plus, it's super easy to sign up.

"I had more time to volunteer and Reading Connections really needed extra help in High Point. Signing up for RSVP and receiving mileage reimbursement gave me more flexibility of traveling from my home in Greensboro to the High Point office. I wouldn't have been able to do so without RSVP benefits." --- Margie Villani

Margie has been a blessing in our High Point office over the past few years. Her ability to volunteer in High Point, though she lives in Greensboro is possible through RSVP. Margie is just one of the tutors who is enrolled in these benefits. If you want to sign up just contact Lydia Davis, Volunteer Coordinator in Greensboro at [email protected] or Anna Brewer, ESOL Coordinator in High Point at [email protected] for more information.
Very Special Training Opportunity

STAR (STudent Achievement in Reading) is the evidence-based adult education program on which our tutor training is based. The six part STAR Training is offered in NC twice a year, and we're excited to announce that this year it will be held at Reading Connections! STAR provides instructors with the research-based knowledge and skills to assess and teach intermediate readers (levels 4 to 8.9) in alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Participants in this 6 day workshop also learn how to monitor instruction and create classroom routines. More information about STAR can be found  here.

STAR will be held at Reading Connections September 23-25 and October 28-30. The training will run all day on each of those days. It is well worth the time, and tutors who complete the training will receive a STAR certificate issued by the Adult Basic Skills Department at Appalachian State University! Please email Lydia at [email protected] if you are interested in attending.
