Dear Devotees,

Namaste!  The Temple is open all day tomorrow (Friday), in honor of the Fourth of July Independence Day weekend.  Saturday, July 4 is Sankata Hara Chaturthi, a special day for Ganapati worship. Abhishekam will be performed at 7:00 pm in the Navagraha Building. A beautiful new silver kavach has just arrived for Ganapati and Siddhi and Buddhi.

Declare your Independence.  Fourth of July celebrates America's independence from Britain.  In this, India and the U.S. are similar - they both got independence from Great Britain.  Political independence is a good thing.  Economic independence is a good thing.  But there is one type of independence that almost no people have anywhere in the world.  What is it?  Independence from the tyranny of the senses. The senses are like tyrants, always grabbing a hold of the mind and saying "Give me this, give me this!".  It is like the mind is subject to taxation with representation!  All the spiritual techniques, such as practicing silence for a few minutes a day, are designed to give us independence from the tyranny of the senses.  This is the most fundamental type of independece.

New Board of Trustees.  If you look at parenthood, for most people today it is irrational.  The cost of raising children is so high! College is so expensive!  Lots of arguments and discipline with the children is unavoidable!  Parenthood is a crazy enterprise! Yet most people opt for it.  In the end, parents say that they benefit immensely from having children.  There is nothing like it.  From a selfish standpoint, parenthood may make no sense in modern society.  From a selfless standpoint, it is wonderful.

In the same way, the Temple itself needs parents.  Up until now, Jill and I have been the main parents, assisted by so many volunteers.  Now we want to enlist the help of many others who would also like to be parents.  In July, we are recruiting new members for the Board of Trustees, who will take a parental role in the Temple.  This Board will form a permanent foundation for the management of the Temple.  Once this Board of Trustees is set, we don't expect that it will change much.  If you are interested in joining, please contact me immediately at [email protected].

This week, the Temple needs:
  • TIL OIL (sesame oil), used daily for dipams for God.- 5 litres per week.
  • Chips small packets (50 bags per box @Costco or Sams Club) to feed the homeless on Sundays.  3 boxes needed by Saturday (150).
  • Jars of jam (for sandwich seva). 6 per week used.
  • 200 water bottles - for Sunday Sandwich Seva, drop at the kitchen by Saturday.
  • Prasad for Thursday - to offer to Sri Sai, at 6:30pm & 8pm.
  • Devotees may drop off any donated food items in the kitchen pantry/closet.  If the kitchen or pantry is closed, leave outside the door.  Thanks to the many people who donate food items to the temple!
With loving regards,
Craig Sastry
FROM SAI BABA

Love is God.  There is no love sans service.  Service with devotion demands sacrifice. Sacrifice never implies leaving our everything.  It is seeing God in all. By doing this, even without our knowledge, we strive for the well-being of others.  We live for ever for others.
