Slow Down: Back to School Means Sharing the Road
Things get a little crazy on the roads during the school year: Buses are everywhere, kids on bikes are hurrying to get to school before the bell rings, harried parents are trying to drop their kids off before work.

It's never more important for drivers to slow down and pay attention than when kids are present - especially before and after school.

According to research by the National Safety Council, most of the children who lose their lives in bus-related incidents are 4 to 7 years old, and they're walking. They are hit by the bus, or by a motorist illegally passing a stopped bus. A few precautions go a long way toward keeping children safe:

  • Don't block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn, forcing pedestrians to go around you; this could put them in the path of moving traffic
  • In a school zone when flashers are blinking, stop and yield to pedestrians crossing the crosswalk or intersection
  • Always stop for a school patrol officer or crossing guard holding up a stop sign
  • Take extra care to look out for children in school zones, near playgrounds and parks, and in all residential areas
  • Don't honk or rev your engine to scare a pedestrian, even if you have the right of way
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped for pedestrians
  • Always use extreme caution to avoid striking pedestrians wherever they may be, no matter who has the right of way
  • If the school bus driver has out the sign indicating you should stop, do not try to beat the sign being fully extended because accidents often happen that way;
  • Keep in mind that the bus will obstruct your full view of the roadway, so proceed with caution when it is legally okay for you to pass the bus.

By exercising a little extra care and caution, drivers and pedestrians can co-exist safely in school zones.

Teen Drivers

Back to school means and more teen drivers on the road. When inexperience meets the road, crash risks increase. Practice builds experience and reduces risk. Learn more and get free resources at  DriveitHOME.org .

A single young passenger - even a sibling - increases the changes of a deadly crash by 44%. 

New teen drivers often fail to drive the appropriate speed for conditions - this comes with experience. 

About half of teens killed in crashes were not wearing a seat belt.

The fatal crash rate of 16 year olds is nearly twice as high at night, according to the Institute  for Highway Safety. Most of these tragic crashes happen relatively early typically between 9 p.m. and midnight. Inclement weather is also dangerous. 

Please make sure you know where your children are at all times and who they are with. We just had a very tragic accident in Southington, CT where a young teen driver, with a 13 year old passenger veered off the highway killing both parties. The driver was not supposed to be driving this young passenger on the roadways under our laws.
