Prayer for Today

O God: Give me strength to live another day;
Let me not turn coward before its difficulties or prove recreant to its duties;
Let me not lose faith in other people;
Keep me sweet and sound of heart, in spite of ingratitude, treachery, or meanness;
Preserve me from minding little stings or giving them;
Help me to keep my heart clean and to live so honesty and fearlessly that no outward failure can dishearten me or take away the joy of conscious integrity;
Open wide the eyes of my soul that I may see good in all things;
Grant me this day some new vision of thy truth;
Inspire me with the spirit of joy and gladness; and make me the cup of strength to suffering souls; in the name of the strong Deliverer, our only Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

The Journey of Giving
By John Vernon Oaks

By worldly standards I'm rich. I have food, more than one pair of shoes, clothes for every season, good health care, reliable transportation, a comfortable place to sleep, and I owe no one. Yet, by U.S. standards I'm not at all rich. Years ago, while on the road to financial wealth, I listened to the wrong advice and was beaten to a financial pulp and landed in a ditch. While in the ditch I had a lucky break; I was on my church's stewardship committee (because I didn't mind making phone calls) and they sent me to a local stewardship conference where I heard Bishops Ted Jones and Cate Waynick describe their journeys to tithing and the joy and richness of life that journey brought them. I committed to tithe ... right then. On the way home from that conference in my $70 car I figured out how I could do it. Just keep a log of every little bit I earned and on Sunday 10% of the week's earnings would go to church. I did it ... tithed to the penny every little bit of income for a year. What happened? My checkbook recovered, and I'm still giving with the tithe as the minimum.

What am I discovering on my journey of giving? When I started sharing what I had, worrying about the lack of money stopped. That's when my pocketbook began to heal. Most remarkable, though, has been the healing of my soul, the freedom reaped from the peace of mind gained from being a go-giver rather than a go-getter.

Have I sold everything? No. To sell all I own and follow Jesus is more than I can do! My failure at selling all I own is buffered a bit by recalling: "For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible."

Here's what this mortal soul has done though: I've given it all away through the miracle of Planned Giving.

What did the rich man do after the suggestion to go sell what he owned? We don't know. One thing I do know for certain: I love me and my fellow man more after coming to grips with giving away what I have been given.

The road is wide enough for you to join me on my journey. Should you stay on the tithing road for a year, as I did, you may wish to continue. You'll never know 'til you try! Of this I'm certain: You'll not regret the journey.

John Vernon Oaks is the stewardship officer for the  Episcopal Diocese of Indiana. He worships at St. Paul's  Cathedral in Indianapolis.

Holy Nativity Church's Annual Stewardship Campaign Begins This Month

Stewardship is about being grateful, responsible stewards of the gifts we receive from God. The tradition of giving back to God and to the church comes from the Biblical practice of "tithing," which means to give back a tenth of our earnings to God (Numbers 18:26). The Episcopal Church sees stewardship as more than simply contributing money to the church; it's also about contributing time and talents, and volunteering for ministry and mission. It's about reaching out to build relationships from a perspective of abundance instead of scarcity.

Your pledge will support Holy Nativity's work, mission, and many ministries in the coming year. Your pledge is crucial to how we grow and flourish as a parish. Please take to heart the role your parish community plays in your weekly life and pray over your giving for 2016.

November 8 - Parishioners share stewardship stories and thoughts at both services (if you would like to volunteer, please contact the church office)

November 15 - Pledge ingathering at both services

"Here I Am Send Me" Grants
Available for Those
Preparing for Christian Service

The Fall 2015 application period for the Nellie Hartman "Here I Am Send Me" grant program is September 15 - October 31, 2015.

Nellie Hartman was a longtime member of Holy Nativity Episcopal Church.
 Upon her death she left endowed funds to be used for the preparation of young men and women for a life of Christian service and/or mission work. Accordingly, Holy Nativity Church is offering individual grants and stipends of up to $5,000 for work-study, educational, and enrichment opportunities to eligible individuals. Applications must be received by the Church by October 31, 2015 to be considered.

This fund is available to individuals seeking to prepare themselves for a life of Christian service or mission. Ms. Hartman's expressed objective for all of the recipients of the monies from the fund was that they develop a personal Christian rule of life, support Judeo-Christian values, come to know Jesus Christ and the "fun" of life, experiencing the joy which comes from serving both God and humanity as summed up in the two great commandments.

For complete information about the "Here I Am Send Me" grant program and to download an application, click here.
Rev. Vanover spoke on the subject of "happiness" at the recent Hawaii Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa Founders Day 2015 event.  Pictured with Rev. Vanover are Alvin Wong, the "Happiest Person in America" and an area teacher. The HADK is a fraternity of teachers and retired teachers.

Holy Nativity parishioner Nico Montalvo led the Sunday School on Sunday, October 4 as part of a Boy Scout project he is working on.
All the kids really enjoyed Nico's class!
