Don't miss the 2015 Far West Ski Association 83rd Annual Convention here in San Diego this year!
 
The Far West Ski Association, founded in 1930, is a volunteer, non-profit organization representing 170 affiliated ski clubs located throughout nine regional councils in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The Association conducts active programs in public affairs, skier safety, ski heritage, athletics, racing, communications, travel, council development, ski industry, and community outreach.

We have a very exciting lineup of speakers and special guests for our upcoming 83rd Annual Convention at the Town and Country Resort & Convention Center June 4-7, 2015 in beautiful San Diego. Many of the events are free and open to the public. We are confident that you will enjoy their presentations and ask that you share this with your ski friends. Ask them to join us and perhaps join one of San Diego's Ski Clubs. 

 

Notable guests and speakers in the Public Affairs Panel and Snowsports Leadership Academy include:

 

Stacey Cook, Olympian and US Ski Team member from Mammoth Lakes has been named as the keynote speaker. Stacey, a member of the women's speed team opened the 2015 season with a bang, and was a part of the excitement. Lindsey Vonn (1st), Stacey Cook (2nd) and Julia Mancuso (3rd) snagged the first-ever historic U.S. podium sweep in the Lake Louise downhill.

 

Billy Kidd, 1964 Olympic Slalom Silver Medalist is a true legend in American skiing. He and teammate Jimmie Heuga became the first American men to win Olympic medals in alpine skiing. Billy remains very active as the Director of Skiing at Steamboat Ski Resort and runs the Billy Kidd Performance Center.

 

Shawn Styles, San Diego native is a meteorologist and lifestyle reporter on CBS News 8. "Weather affects peoples lives," he says. "I can help them make plans." Speaking of plans, Shawn never planned to be in TV. "Television chose me," he says. "My career as a snow ski racer was ending; I had also worked in movies and television. Bringing people the weather seemed the natural way to go." After all, it is a perfect fit for the self-described outdoorsman who loves to surf, ski, snowboard, fish, sail and play tennis, among other activities!

 

Craig Broussard, is a digital marketing, mobile marketing, and social media expert. As the founder of Mobiigo, LLC, he leads a passionate team of experts in building clients online presence.

 

Matthew Drake, National Ski Areas Association Pacific Northwest Director, is the Chairman and CEO of Mt Hood Meadows Ski Resort which received the NSAA Best Employee Education Award and the FWSA Tommi Tyndall Award in 2014.

 

Ben Finley and Art Clay. At a time when African Americans on the ski slopes were a rarity and black ski clubs were an exception, Ben and Art were not deterred from their vision to create a national Black Ski Summit. This led to The National Brotherhood of Skiers which was chartered in 1974 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in Illinois in 1975. Today, NBS has grown to 60 clubs representing 43 cities and a membership of 3,000.  

 

Chuck Morse, former Executive Director of FWSA and long term participant in the snowsports industry. He has an Honorary Life Membership in the United States Ski and Snowboard Association and is presently the Executive Director of the La Habra Community Foundation.  Last year Chuck was named Veteran of the Year by the California Legislature's 60th District for his outstanding volunteer work in honoring America's veterans. 

 

Alexa & Jimmy Wehsener, from San Diego and on the Mammoth Mountain Race Team are FWSA/San Diego Council of Ski Club Athletic Scholarship recipients. The FWSA Athletic Scholarship Program has now granted more than $92,000 to seventy different deserving USSA junior racers since 2004.

 

Sean Wetterberg, the Winter Sports Program Manager for the US Forest Service and is located at the Albuquerque Service Center. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoys skiing, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, and fishing.

 

Mike Whitaker, a BollĂ© and Nordica roaming brand ambassador. An extensive business background earned him the calling to represent the state of Utah as both a pro skier and business contributor for various ski industry missions under the Governor's Office of Economic Development.

There are many fun events to participate in. Highlighted here is an event open to club members even if you do not attend the convention.

 

Thursday, June 4th we are offering a San Diego Seal Tour and a City Trolley Tour. The City Tour is $45 which includes the tour and lunch at McP's Irish Pub and Grill in Coronado. The Seal Tour is $35 and will depart from Seaport Village, it is a 90 minute water and land experience in a big Hydra Terra vehicle. Both will be great fun and are great prices and both are tours take place Thursday.
