Creative Edge Master Shop works with artists! We would like to share a luminous piece titled
The Sunny Day from artist Sue Berkey, capturing the art of water-jet through Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT).
Long thought of as a sensible form of floor covering, adorning elementary schools, Walmart's, and recreation centers, VCT comes in many colors, textures, and patterns. A little known fact is that VCT is a green product. The composition is less than 10% vinyl, while 90% is made from locally sourced crushed limestone.
Creative Edge Master Shop has long considered VCT's potential as an artistic medium, particularly when water-jet can be used to shape and detail.

"The Sunny Day was completed in December of 2015. This conceptual piece was a huge learning curve for me. It went through several incarnations that considered different materials before it occurred to me that Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) might solve all the problems. I knew this particular piece was 100% dependent on color accuracy. When I found the perfect colors in VCT samples at Creative Edge Master Shop, I knew it was a go!"
"First, I made a sketch of the window mullions, vase with tulips, and the mug. Next, I hired a professional to convert that into a computer vector drawing. Creative Edge did the final computer set-up and water-jet cutting. I was there every step of the way. Creative Edge effortlessly carried the baton to the finish line for my challenging floor sculpture."
"The inspiration for this piece came as I was thinking about paintings that depict bright direct sun patches. I thought "wouldn't it be interesting to see that in 3-D, rather than 2-D?" Also, I have 4 large south facing windows in my live-in studio space. I'm constantly watching sun patches 'travel' across the floor to no end of curiosity and charm."
The Sunny Day will be in a shown at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa from February 11th through mid-May 2016.
The Figge Art Museum is the premier art exhibition and education facility between Chicago and Des Moines. It's landmark glass building on the banks of the Mississippi, designed by British architect David Chipperfield, is home to one of the Midwest's finest art collection, and hosts world-class travelling exhibitions.
