Freshmen Cohort Begins Project Based Learning
This week students are starting to work on their first mini-project within the cohort setting.  After learning about topic sentences, powergraph structure, question building and research technique, students are now exploring a multitude of topics as they relate to World Cultures, Biology, and Health.  All topics are stemming from the concern that Earth has a carrying capacity and that our growing population may someday be in trouble. How many people can the island we call Earth really support?

Focus on Careers works on Soft Skills
Last week in Focus on Careers, Junior students completed the Marshmallow Challenge!  Students were challenged to create the tallest, free standing structure that could support a marshmallow using only 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 yard of string and 1 yard of tape.  This challenge was used to demonstrate to students the importance of soft skills such as communication and team work.

Project Based Learning in Alt Ed
The alternative, project-based learning classes at HUHS taught by Ms. Erika Dimka, are researching areas of interest related to pools and/or the waterpark industry. These projects were inspired by the renovations currently underway at the city's Veterans Memorial Pool.To help with this project, two guest speakers have graciously given up their time: Hartford City Engineer Jason Schall and Noah's Ark General Manager Mark Whitfield. Students will apply what they've learned from these speakers and their own research to projects relating to biology, physics, and environmental sciences. Noah's Ark has also donated  gift certificates for next summer to the group whose project best demonstrates understanding of learning targets.

Safety Drill Practice - October 1
On Thursday, October 1, 2015, HUHS will be conducting several safety drills in the afternoon.  We are running these drills in conjunction with the Hartford Police Department.  Please do not be alarmed when you see an increased police presences that afternoon.  We will, as part of the drill, be practicing our off-campus evacuation procedures.  This will involve police blocking off access to the school from the surrounding roads. If you are coming to the high school at that time, you will not be able to gain access.  The evacuation drill will run from approximately 1:20-2:20 PM.
We will be using a modified bell schedule to accommodate the drills.

Wisconsin Education Fair
The Wisconsin Education Fair is coming to Arrowhead High School North Campus on Wednesday, September 23, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm.   Over 110 different colleges, universities, technical schools, trade schools, and military representatives are available to provide information to interested students.  A financial aid program will be presented twice during the evening.   Scanners will be used by the representatives, so students will need to register online before attending the fair.   Please do this at:  www.gotocollegefairs.com
PSAT/NMSQT for Juniors
College-bound juniors should consider taking the PSAT/NMSQT, which is the best preparation for the SAT and entry into the National Merit Scholarship Corporation programs. It is an optional exam that measures critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills that are important for success in college. Students do not have to recall facts from literature, history, science, or math formulas. This test measures reasoning and critical thinking skills.

All students who take the PSAT/NMSQT will receive an official score report. They will receive scores for critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills and will see how their score compares to those of other students across the country. Students will be able to see which answers they got right or wrong. They will also receive information about how they performed on specific academic skills.

Students who take the test will receive free access to My College QuickStart, an online college and planning tool that contains an online PSAT/NMSQT Score Report; a customized SAT Study Plan; a personality test; and personalized lists of colleges, majors, and careers. For more information, visit www.collegeboard.org .

Registration for the PSAT is due Friday, October 9 at 3:00pm in the Student Services Office. The cost for the PSAT is $20 and checks should be made payable to HUHS. The exam will be given on Wednesday, October 14 from 7:25am to 11:00am. At the time of registration, students will be given a student guide that includes test-taking tips and a practice test.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Student Services Office at 670-3200, ext. 214 or [email protected].
