Sales Tax Update - Frequently Asked Questions

The Sales Tax Bill,   S2784 was signed into law by Governor Christie on December 9, 2015. These changes expand the tax savings to a larger segment of boat sales in the state. The sales tax will be reduced to 50% of the tax for every boat sold in NJ. This effectively makes the sales tax 3.5% across  the board for boats, regardless of the price of the boat - with a cap of $20,000. The bill also includes a 30 day grace period for use tax imposition.

The MTA/NJ met with the NJ Division of Taxation on Monday, January 11th to discuss the new law, provide information and direction. They have posted a list of some of the Frequently Asked Questions that may help clarify the implementation of the new law. We know that there are still more questions and we will continue to work to obtain answers as quickly as possible.

Political Action Committees Merge

The  Marine Retailers Association of the Americas  and the  National Marine Manufacturers Association  have merged their political action committees to form one voice for recreational boating on Capitol Hill.
BoatPAC, the recreational boating industry's political action committee, is overseen by a joint board of MRAA and NMMA members. BoatPAC enables the marine industry to build and strengthen relationships with lobbyists, policy-makers, fundraisers and others who share our industry's interests and goals. It works by bringing all of the industry's segments together to support Congressional candidates who will represent and protect the interests of the recreational boating industry on Capitol Hill.

Register Today for the 2016 American Boating Congress
May 9-11, Washington D.C.

You are the industry's most effective advocate. No lobbyist is as influential as an employer or employee from a Congress member's district or state. Attending ABC and participating in Capitol Hill visits with others from your state is the best way to educate your representatives on issues that impact your business. It's your opportunity to build and strengthen relationships that lead to a brighter future for the recreational boating industry. Members of the MTA/NJ will be heading to Washington to attend this important event and meet with New Jersey's Congressional Delegation.
