The Debate About College Endowments
Over the past couple of weeks, college professor Victor Fleischer's op-ed "
Stop Universities From Hoarding Money" re-ignited a debate among nonprofit professionals, reporters, and online commenters. In case you missed it, here's what all the commotion was about:
In the op-ed, published in the New York Times, Victor Fleischer, professor of law at the University of San Diego, opens with the question: "Who do you think received more cash from Yale's endowment last year: Yale students, or the private equity fund managers hired to invest the university's money?" Fleischer goes on to reveal the difference between the amount of money Yale paid to fund managers (about $480 million), as compared to the amount given to students in need of tuition assistance ($170 million). Fleischer's skewering of Yale and similar institutions' endowment spending habits sparked an at times heated debate...
